Twenty Eight

"Er, ahem." Takeda cleared his throat before the whole team who were sitting right before him and Coach Ukai. "I'll give you our upcoming schedule for the time being. Once it's set in stone, I'll hand out written copies."

"Does Take-chan seem kinda down and out?" Tanaka whispered to Nishinoya.

"Does he?" Nishinoya whispered back, a brow raised.

"First off, the weekend after next." Takeda continued with his briefing, reading from his notebook. "We'll be having a practice match with Hinoyama High School, from our prefecture."

"Right!" The boys agreed.

"And regarding the previously mention excursion to Tokyo, their Inter-High Preliminaries start this weekend, as I said yesterday. Ours in Miyagi took place over 3 consecutive days, but theirs spans 3 weeks, with matches held on Sundays. As a result, the joint practices take place after their preliminaries." He explained. "We need to have your parents' permission for you to go on the trip, so I'll hand out the paper for that later, as well. The school's consent is also in essence, no problem."

"We've got a good idea of expenses, too." Coach Ukai added.

"However..." Takeda's tone suddenly dropped as he pushed up his glasses. Everyone watched him intently, waiting for him to go on. "As there are plenty of teams in our prefecture who are at or above our level, in trying to travel outside the prefecture, we'll be in competition with them. It's a good opportunity, after all."

"... That said, I assume you already know." Suddenly, it hit everyone what he was going to say next. "That you have final exams next month?"

Coach Ukai jumped slightly at the mention of final exams while Kageyama, Hinata, Tanaka and Nishinoya froze, staring right at Takeda.

"You know that, right?" Takeda asked but the four suspects moved their gaze to the side harmoniously, unwilling to look at him in the eyes and face reality. Coach Ukai felt a little sorry for the boys, having went through similar thing when he was in high school. "It seems that Tokyo's test period is basically the same as ours so, that means the joint practice session will take place right after."

"So, as you might already expect," Takeda continued mercilessly. The four started trembling violently, as if they were experience their very own personal 9.5 magnitude earthquake. "There are supplementary lessons to attend for any subjects you fail..."

He relayed the vice-principal's words: 'We hold supplementary lessons on the weekend, you know? If the situation calls for it, they're also held during summer break. It would just be physically impossible to go on a trip.'

The four academically troubled boys felt a nuclear bomb explode within them, leaning back in utter shock and horror. Nishinoya and Tanaka jumped to their feet, attempting to 'escape' from the exams by bursting into a sprint.

"Tanaka! Nishinoya! Where do you think you're going?!" Daichi exclaimed, reaching out his hand to them. "There's nowhere to run!! Ennoshita, catch them!!"

"A fai - failing grade!" Hinata panicked, his face pale and unwell. "What number is that?!"

"You're stuck at that point?!" Sugawara sweat dropped.

"Kageyama's not breathing!" Yamaguchi exclaimed, seeing how stiff Kageyama remained. [Name] ran to the setter's side, shaking him back to life.

"Seeing as we also told you guys to balance club activities with your studies, you've got to give us results reflecting that." Sugawara chuckled lightly.

"I never get failing marks." Tsukishima rubbed it in their faces.

"Me neither." Ennoshita added, holding the failed escapees Nishinoya and Tanaka in his hands.
