Ding Zihua turned his head to look at the sword. He shivered as the cold metal pressed against his neck. Then, he looked up to see a man in a black uniform with a mask covering his face. Looking closer, he saw a signa for the imperial family branded onto his neck. Ding Zihua recognized this signa immediately, this man was part of the emperor's secret forces.
The man looked at him with annoyed eyes and said in a slower tone "No funny business, you hear me!" as he angled himself behind Ding Zihua and pushed him, forcing him to step forward. They were moving at a fast pace and Ding Zihua tripped multiple times on the way as he grasped his situation. The attackers before were nothing but hired mercenaries and weren't a true threat to Bai Wei so the presence of the emperor's private army only meant one of two things. One, the mercenaries hired were only bait to lure Bai Wei into an open space where the special forces could take him by surprise, or two, the special forces were sent for him. They were meant to make sure that Ding Zihua would never make it back to the Yunnan Nation, back to his family. In this way, the emperor would not have to uphold his secret decree to Ding Zihua.
Ding Zihua was inclined to believe the latter theory. Ding Zihua was filled with panic and belatedly tried to struggle and break free. He took the man by surprise by stepping on his foot and rearing his head back and managed to break free. However, this freedom was short lived because after a few steps the man grabbed him by the wrist and pulled him back. Now having lost the element of surprise, Ding Zihua was completely overpowered by the attacker. He struggled helplessly in the soldiers' grasp for a moment before giving up. It was hopeless now, so it was better to cease his struggle and bid his time for the right moment.
The man watched all of this and chuckled amusedly before dragging him along through the forest at a much faster pace than before. This time Ding Zihua couldn't keep up at all because of his scholarly physique, so he was practically dragged along. Ding Zihua heard fighting growing louder and louder and a sinking feeling began growing in his stomach. It seemed there was a third option that he had failed to consider.
The clashes of swords became louder and louder until Ding Zihua was pulled into a small field in the woods. At the center of the clearing stood Bai Wei, who was currently engaged in a seven-to-one battle. He was surrounded but showed no signs of stress or fatigue. In fact, he even seemed a little preoccupied with his thoughts. Ding Zihua looked at Bai Wei fighting off the mercenaries with ease and felt relieved that he wasn't badly injured. This relief was sadly short lived however as the soldier from the emperor's army forced him down onto his knees and once again pressed a sword against his neck. After seeing this, the mercenaries all withdrew a bit and formed a circle with a radius of five meters around Bai Wei. They snickered with gleeful looks upon their faces as they looked at the soldier holding Ding Zihua. It was almost as if they had already won.
"General Bai, I have come to make a trade with you. His life for yours." The man said in a condescending tone. While saying this, the man grabbed Ding Zihua by the hair and forced him to look up at Bai Wei. Bai Wei stopped fighting and looked towards the man, observing both him and Ding Zihua. They both shared a gaze with each other from twenty yards away so Ding Zihua could not clearly see Bai Wei's facial expression, but he could feel the sadness and pain radiating from Bai Wei. He had to put a stop to this right now. He had let Bai Wei be put in danger for him over and over, he couldn't let this happen again. Ding Zihua opened his mouth and shouted at Bai Wei "Bai Wei, don't do it."
In response the sword around his neck got even closer and a shallow wound was formed on his neck. Ding Zihua involuntarily shivered as he felt his blood seep down from the wound and travel down his neck. He was so scared right now, but he was tired of being a coward. Just as Ding Zihua was about to open his mouth again, Bai Wei raised his hand and began walking towards him. The mercenaries all tightly grasped their swords and prepared to attack when the soldier holding Ding Zihua waved his hand to signal them to retreat. They all stepped back and disappeared into the tree lines once again at an alarming speed. Now there were only the three of them left in the field. Ding Zihua belatedly realized that there were flowers blooming in the field as it was springtime now and felt that the flowers were quite ironic considering the current situation.
Bai Wei quickly closed the gap between them and stopped only ten meters away from the two. Now up close, Ding Zihua could see that Bai Wei had gained some more injuries and looked a little worse for wear than he had previously seemed.
"Do you promise not to hurt him?" Bai Wei said while looking at the man.
The man smiled gleefully and said "Of course, I am a man of my word. We will not harm him in any way"
Bai Wei sighed in relief when he heard this and dropped his sword while saying "Okay, I accept your deal."
The man smiled hearing this and gestured at the mercenaries one again. All at once, dozens of arrows came shooting out from the woods all headed towards Bai Wei. Bai Wei just closed his eyes and made no attempts to doge the arrows. Ding Zihua watch helplessly as countless arrows pierced through Bai Wei's body. He sunk down helplessly as the man released him and walked towards Bai Wei. Once at his side, the man stomped on Bai Wei's leg and pulled out one of the arrows from his leg.
The man looked gleefully as blood dripped down from the arrow while saying"Hope you don't mind, you know how it is for us mercenaries. Gotta have proof of completion and all that"
Then, the man turned away and gestured to the others signaling a retreat before leisurely walking into the woods. When he was almost out of earshot, Ding Zihua heard him muse to himself while laughing cheerfully "Who would have thought that the God of War, Bai Wei, would fall because of a measly traitor."
I finished reviewing the old chapters so now I am back to updating. I'll try to release a new chapter every three to four days at least until the end of the summer.
