Somewhere in the upper realm, a group of scientists surrounded a computer. They huddled closely as they all tried to get a better look at the screen, talking in an excited manner as they examined the data.
"Wow! These are some exemplary results from subject 496, perfect results in three of the lower plains! Truly remarkable!" One of the researcher's gushed while looking at the screen.
The upper realm was an interesting place, filled with what would be considered gods by the lower realms. However, to the people who reside there they were simply ordinary people. This is said because they knew there once truly were gods. The gods of the upper realm had slowly faded away as civilization advanced and the need for gods diminished, but it was still believed that under the correct circumstances, the gods could return. That was the main idea behind the project "Kilo", to create an artificial god by siphoning power from the lower realms.
They did this by locking onto a particularly powerful repeating soul among the lower realms and sent out subjects that they had plucked from the expanse of time to gather the soul's repeat apparitions. Repeating souls were not uncommon among the lower realms, they were souls of the same source code that would split unintentionally in the reincarnation stage. In this way, there were many "parallels" of people across the realms. Almost the same, but still different.
Usually, the parallel souls would be weaker due to the split across multiple dimensions, but this couldn't be said for "Kilo", the soul they had chosen to collect. Not only was 'Kilo's soul simultaneously present in thousands of lower realms something previously thought impossible), but also his soul pieces strength were all comparable to some of the other fully formed souls within the lower realms. Truly a fascinating research subject.
To create their god, the researchers came up with a plan to collect parts of 'Kilo's soul across the dimensions and then conjoin them into one being in the upper realm. It was theorized that when enough of his soul was consolidated to gain conscience he would then solidify into a given form. A higher being among higher beings, and the perfect tool to use to launch the higher realm into a new era. The researcher's eyes practically glowed when they thought about it.
To gather the soul pieces, they hand plucked souls from the reincarnation path of the lower realms and gave them the task of gaining the affection of "Kilo", and their hardware system would then collect the soul piece through the close contact with the target. The affection rating dictated how much of the soul piece the target would allow the host to take with them. The subjects, or hosts, would then collect these soul pieces, or system points, and fatten into a ripe sheep that could then be culled at the right time. Sure, this would sacrifice a few souls, but they were all lower beings, so the scientists had no qualms.
No one shed tears over the laminations of ant.
Behind, them laid a large cylindrical tube filled with a green glowing light. This was the power vat created to house the soul of "Kilo" until it condensed enough to take full form. "Kilo" unbeknownst to the researchers had awakened consciousness a long time ago and infiltrated their systems to observe the situation. Once he had enough power, he was able to tether to his soul pieces. This allowed him to gather power from the pieces upon their death even without the hardwares collection. The only downside of this was that when he gathered the energy from them after death, he would also gain their emotions and memories.
Normally, this would be an obsolete downside as the hosts usually only managed to gather an average of ten percent of his affections within the realms; However, subject 496 was an exception. This subject was able to grasp one hundred percent of his soul piece's affections consistently, and their path to happiness was never smooth so large levels of obsession and affection washed over him every time he collected the energy from these soul pieces. "Kilo" clearly knew that this wasn't a good thing and didn't like the idea of being called influenced by others, but the large influx of energy made him hesitate to sever the tether to these soul pieces. Helplessly, all "Kilo" could do was to condense some more of his soul pieces to send to the realm that Bai- no subject 496, was visiting.
To get more power... and also to watch over him.

After dying, Bai Wei opened his eyes in the system space once again. The memories of their last moments playing vividly in his mind, Bai Wei smiled a silly smile. Bai Wei had never been able to finagle Ding Zihua into makeup ever again after their wedding, but he had convinced his beloved to wear women's clothes a few more times. The sight was always so funny, especially when paired with Ding Zihua's embarrassed expression. Bai Wei was even able to get Hua to secretly take some photos for keepsakes.
Thinking about this Bai Wei chuckled again and opened his inventory (curtesy of Hua) and saw his belongings. He had one third of the miracle pill left as well as the photos. Bai Wei touched the photos lovingly and thought to himself that he should continue collecting photographs of the two as the mission progresses. With this in mind, he quickly signaled Lu that he wanted to enter the next world immediately.
