"Tea?" Bai Wei said while smiling gently as he walked out of the small break room.
Bai Wei's newfound acknowledgement of his existence surprised Biao Feng. Since Biao Feng first entered the room until now, Bai Wei had never spoken a word to him or even gestured towards him. If not for the few fleeting glances when he first entered, Biao Feng may have doubted that Bai Wei even knew he was here. While his actions might deter others, Biao Feng remained unbothered. He knew that eccentricity and genius went hand in hand and Bai Wei was no different.
To say the least, Bai Wei was a mysterious figure within the 1st legion. His works inspired awe, yet he spoke only when necessity demanded. People only saw him was when he was handing in his test results and next course of action to his superiors. He never even said a word during these reports- just handed over his documents and then left. Bai Wei was more of an enigma to the people of the 1st Legion than a coworker: a strange but interesting creature.
With such a stellar reputation, it was no surprise that Biao Feng and Bai Wei had never interacted. Biao Feng was the model of an exemplary soldier. He wasn't an outgoing person, nor was he the type to curry favor with others. This left him with no reason to seek Bai Wei. Similarly, Bai Wei was... well, Bai Wei. As a result, their chances for interaction were slim to none. Ordinarily, these two would have never crossed paths in their lifetime, but these weren't ordinary circumstances.
There was only one reason that Biao Feng would attempt to speak with Bai Wei, and that was an absolute necessity. Before today, Biao Feng was indeed a model soldier, but the events of the past few hours had opened his eyes. With a clearer and broader view than before, Biao Feng realized that the system, the way of life that he had always abided by, was deeply flawed. He came to realize that it was neither normal nor right to be at the whims of others, fighting every day just to be afforded what should be considered basic rights.
More than anything else, Biao Feng realized he was tired of just surviving. He wanted to live.
With a change in his mindset, new opportunities opened their doors to him. Yes, he was currently in quite the predicament, but it was more than that. This crisis could also be a new beginning.
Biao Feng felt a rush of excitement and ambition that he had never felt before. He was now going to stop being a soldier and start being himself again. And he would make sure that no one would ever take his identity away from him ever again.
First, he needed to rid himself of his chains. He needed Bai Wei, or more specifically Bai Wei's guiding serum, to help clear the path for his new beginning.
Back to the present, Biao Feng found that his earlier threats had no effect on Bai Wei, so he adjusted his methods. He quietly followed Bai Wei back into another room that was off to the side. He kept a straight face as he entered the room, but couldn't help the flicker of interest in his eyes as he observed the new room.
Compared to the previous room, this room actually felt somewhat used. It was a small office space with the usual office furniture and an additional couch and TV in the farthest corner. Lamps that were scattered across the room lit the entire space up. It was very dark compared to the harsh lighting in the laboratory, but instead of seeming musty, it gave off a cozy feeling. Biao Feng walked into the room and sat in one of the two chairs facing the desk. Once seated, Biao Feng recounted his troubles once again in a ploy to ask Bai Wei for aid.
His story went like this: it all started when he returned from an overseas deployment. He was on his way to the guiding room, but was summoned to the general's office. In the office were his commanding officers, Ren and Mao. The smug look on Ren's face as he stood behind the general was a telltale sign that something was wrong. Ren hated his guts, so anything that made him this happy was bound to be bad. They soon confirmed his suspicions when the general accused him of infiltrating the logistics department and sharing information with an enemy nation.
Biao Feng immediately knew he was being set up; he originally was going to plead for his innocence when the general cut him off and signaled Ren and Mao to detain him. It was then that Biao Feng realized the general knew it wasn't him. To the general, he was just a witness that needed to be silenced. Biao Feng recalled the information he saw while on the last deployment: the 1st Legion was trying to create artificial espers.
Artificial espers were a banned research path that the government had barred off after too many deaths of innocents, but this ban was a sham meant to console the populace. In actuality, someone had tasked the first legion with gathering test subjects to continue their experiments in secret. The "prisoners of war" that they had been detaining while he was on deployment were instead innocent people gathered to be used as human test subjects by the 1st Legion.
Knowing this, Biao Feng lost all of his trust in the political leaders of the country, but as a long-time soldier, his trust in the military remained unwavering. Biao Feng thought that the leaders of the military were simply unaware of these transactions and intended to report this matter to the higher-ups upon returning to the base; however, the recent chain of events had opened his eyes. The corruption had already infiltrated all levels of the government.
The leaders of the military were supposed to be the force that would keep the political leaders in line, but if they failed, corrections fell onto the citizens of the country. That is, onto Bai Wei and Biao Feng.
"Knowing all of this, I hope that—"
"Yeah, yeah, you need my guiding elixir, right?" Bai Wei cut him off while checking the time on his watch.
Bai Wei's laissez-faire attitude took Biao Feng aback momentarily, but he still nodded his head. Seeing his response, Bai Wei smiled gently at him again and continued, "I don't mind giving you the antidote, but there are a few things you need to do for me first."
Bai Wei stood up and walked over, standing directly in front of the still-sitting Biao Feng, who now felt that something was wrong. Biao Feng tried to struggle in his chair as he felt all of his strength leaving his body. Even lifting one of his fingers had become an insurmountable obstacle, so all he could do was glare at Bai Wei, who was looking down at him. Bai Wei raised his hand and patted Biao Feng's head gently while saying, "Rest for first, okay? After everything is ready, I'll wake you up again."
The last thing Biao Feng saw as his conscience faded was Bai Wei's face, still smiling gently as he continued to pat Biao Feng's head.
...
Once Biao Feng fainted completely, Bai Wei laid his lover down on the floor of the office. He laid Biao Feng's head on his lap and traced the other's facial features with his fingertips.
{Host... whatcha doin~}
Hua was used to Bai Wei's unconventional methods, so he was only a bit surprised even after this sudden development. Hua was simply asking out of curiosity, but a bit of concern was clear in his voice. After all, this was no ordinary drug that Bai Wei had just given to the target.
This potion was an evil elixir that the leaders of the base had requested from Bai Wei. Designed to instill absolute obedience in whoever took it, the drug would separate the soul and body of a person for a fluctuating period. They considered the drug a success for normal people, but not so much for espers.
Usually, the separated soul would remain in a dreamlike state until the effects of the drug wore off, but espers' souls were quite powerful, so there was a high risk of the soul becoming aware during the drugged state. This would cause the esper floating around their body like a ghost for the entire drugged state and failed the precondition that the subject should not keep any memories from the drugged state. Because of this, the drug was considered a failure, and the research abandoned.
Unbeknownst to the leaders of the base, this was the original owner's intended result. He had foreseen the higher-ups using this drug for nefarious purposes and intentionally sabotaged the research. Once the research was scrapped, the original owner planned to destroy the elixir and all of its information; however, this plan changed when Bai Wei took over the body.
"I am ensuring the success of the mission." Bai Wei said, as he continued to trace the other's face for a moment before bending down and kissing Biao Feng's hair. This would probably be the last physical contact that he would have with his lover for at least a few years, so he intended to take advantage while he still had the chance.
