Ding Zihua felt that the sky was falling.
It wasn't until he felt the gravel scrape knees that it wasn't that the sky was falling, but that he was. He thumped down into a kneeling posture as his knees gave out from under him, but he paid no mind to the pain as his knees started to bleed from the rocks. Instead, he kept looking at Bai Wei who was now standing a few feet in front of him. Bai Wei had multiple arrows pierced into his body from multiple different angles. Blood began to seep out from the wounds and dyed his uniform red in a matter of seconds. Bai Wei wavered in his stance, and Ding Zihua instinctively reached out to catch him in his arms, however, his legs had gone completely weak, and he had no strength to stand. Ding Zihua could only watch helplessly as Bai Wei toppled face first onto the ground, landing with a loud thud. The arrows that were in his chest were pushed further and the jagged arrow heads pushed through his chest to reveal their shiny tips across his back.
The soldier who had been holding Ding Zihua walked forward, pulling an arrow out of Bai Wei's leg. He said some meaningless words that Ding Zihua couldn't process before walking off into the woods. Ding Zihua couldn't care less about what the man said as he crawled towards Bai Wei. Once at his side, he looked up again to see the man mumbling to himself as he disappeared into the trees. This time, Ding Zihua was able to hear him clearly.
"Who would have thought that the God of War, Bai Wei, would fall because of a measly traitor."
Ding Zihua felt tears stream down his face and his emotions ran wild for a moment as he looked at Bai Wei. He carefully maneuvered Bai Wei so that he was resting against his chest in a manner that wouldn't touch the arrows and observed his love. Bai Wei's limbs were still and stiff, but his eyes were considerably fluid and full of life. Bai Wei smiled and opened his mouth to speak, but instead of words, blood poured down his chest. Ding Zihua put his hand over Bai Wei's mouth and said "Don't talk, it looks like your lung is pierced. Medics will be here soon, just hold on."
Bai Wei painstakingly raised his arrow filled arm to hold the hand covering his mouth in his own. He interlocked their fingers and kissed the back of his hand. Smiling at their hands for a moment before looking at Ding Zihua with his increasingly unfocused eyes and mouthed out words.
I love you.... And I forgive you.

Having said his piece, Bai Wei closed his eyes. He still had a smile on his face as he held Ding Zihua's hand lovingly. Ding Zihua sat in silence looking at the now still Bai Wei, his eyes unblinking as he looked at the man before him. He barely even realized that other people had arrived until a medic tapped him on the shoulder, telling him to move so that they could examine Bai Wei. All of them shot him with wary glances as they went about their work. This morning, he disappeared into the woods and later a suspicious note was found on the head doctor's desk telling them where to go to find Bai Wei in the woods. They had suspicious that Ding Zihua was directly involved in this case, but no concrete evidence so they kept quiet, only stealing glances at the blood-soaked man as they went about their business.
One of the medics put their hand on Bai Wei's neck to feel his pulse out of habit more than hope. No one here believed that Bai Wei could actually be alive, and right now they were more focused on taking notes on the circumstances than saving people. The medic felt for a pulse and then retracted her hand as if she had been burned. She looked at the arrow-ridden general with shock before quickly put her hand back on his neck. After confirming that it wasn't a mistake, she shouted in surprise "His heart is still beating!"
All the medics stopped what they were doing and looked at the severely wounded man in shock. Even with all those arrows he was still alive? This was nothing short of a miracle. The medics put away their extra thoughts and hurried to transport Bai Wei back to the camp. They all noticed Ding Zihua following behind them in a rigid manner and had half a mind to stop him but didn't. There are bigger fish to fry right now. Once the general is conscious, he can decide what to do with that suspicious man.
...
When Bai Wei woke up, he felt uncharacteristically dazed. He originally planned on spending the time with Hia and Lu after fainting, but didn't realize that his consciousness would completely shut down when he fainted. He looked at the fabric of the tent above him and thought of the time before he fainted. He had ordered Hai to use just enough of the miraculous pill to stabilize him until the medics arrived, and then...
What happened?
Bai Wei recollected the memories of him bleeding out on the field and then collected himself. He closed his eyes once again and went into his system space. Lu tackled Bai Wei as soon as he entered the space. All at once, tongues began to lick all over Bai Wei's face as Lu and Hai greeted him enthusiastically. Lu's tongue was barbed, like a cat, so it kind of hurt but Bai Wei was happy with the sudden affection regardless.
'How much time has passed?'
[It's been two weeks. You really worried me.] Lu responded as he took to laying his entire weight on Bai Wei's chest. Bai Wei reflexively turned to get the weight off him despite not needing to breath.
'Really, what's the situation right now?'
[After it was confirmed that you were stable, one of your underlings stepped into your role as general and continued to advance against the Yunnan province. They've been able to avoid losing any territory, but they haven't advanced either]
'Alright, and Ding Zihua?'
[He's been by your side the entire time you were unconscious. The new general originally intended to torture him for information, but Ding Zihua struck a deal with him to provide battle strategies in exchange for him to be able to stay by your side.]
Bai Wei showed his first real smile in a long time and collected himself before exiting the system space.
...
Bai Wei opened his eyes once again and turned his head a bit to look to his left. Beside the bed was Ding Zihua who was kneeling with his head down. Bai Wei coughed a bit before opening his mouth to speak. Ding Zihua once again covered his mouth and said "Don't speak, you might rupture your lung again. Here's a notepad, write on this."
Bai Wei took the notepad and wrote slowly. His arms shook as he exerted tremendous amounts of effort to write the simple sentence, but he endured until he was done: Are you okay?
[Ding! Target's favorability has risen 1 point and is now 100! Congrats on completing the mission host!]
