Dylan opened her eyes, or at least, she thought she opened her eyes. She couldn't be sure because her surroundings were still pitch black.

She blinked and blinked, but nothing. Just darkness.

"Steve?" Dylan uttered into the void.

Nothing.

She tried again. "Steve? Jonathan? Nancy!"

Her first thought after realizing her shouting was futile was that she was dead. She remembered the countdown, she remembered Eleven charging the metal rod in her grip with electricity, and she remembered how it tore through her arms and into her chest, burning in its trail. It must've failed, the shock couldn't ground, and now she was dead.

Not only dead but stuck in some weird, black purgatory all alone.

Was this a pit stop or was this what death was? Eternal nothingness.

Panic started to set in but she tried to keep her focus. She walked around in the darkness, trying to find anything that might help her understand where she was.

Dylan thought for a moment she heard her favourite song but it was only for a second, and only an octave above a whisper, that she decided she had imagined the sound in comfort.

"Dylan!" She heard, softly, still nothing above a whisper. But the voice familiarly comforting. "Dylan!"

She heard it again, and even though she couldn't see a thing, she spun on her heel and attempted to follow the sound. With each step forward, the sound of her name got louder.

Further into the darkness, there was a speck of light. A glimmering string of gold set aglow against the endless black backdrop. Dylan extended her reach to touch the string with her fingertips. As she did so, it bounced, making a musical noise and sending little bits of glitter up into the air. See any bit of light but her at ease but it only confused her more. What did it mean? What was its purpose? She followed it nonetheless.

The sound of someone calling her got louder as she followed the string's dimly lit path. Steve! She could place the voice now. It was her Steve.

The darkness started to brighten. She kept walking and she could make out a small tunnel of light and as she took a few more steps, she could see a few shadowy silhouettes at the tunnel's end. They were the figures of her friends with Steve at the centre of them all. Steve called her name and looked around. He couldn't see her even though she was so close.

"Steve!" She called back, hoping it would reach him.

He seemed to startle and Dylan was so sure it had worked, that he'd heard her call out to him.
