Nathan POV

The funeral is ill-attended; just my family, Sang, and Marie are standing over the hole of the cheapest plot Mr. Sorenson could find to plant his bitter late wife in at the earliest time the minister would perform the service.

Sang seems to want to stand nearer Marie, but after the first attempt at standing at her side failed, Sang kept herself a few feet away in a show of stubborn solidarity and support. Mr. Sorenson doesn't show up, so if not for Sang's insistence Marie would be standing alone.

My heart clenches at the dedication shown to an undeserving sister. The scene Sang and I had walked in on at her old house was haunting. He father had made his way home, but he was drunk again. Marie and him were standing in each other's faces screaming. I distinctly heard Marie accusing Mr. Sorenson of killing her mom.

Mr. Sorenson didn't even notice when Sang and I had walked in. Kota snuck up the side of the house and hid in Sang's old room while we went in the front door. Too much shouting disguised the sounds of our entrance.

Sang had acted like she wanted to step between her sister and their father, but I held her back. Just as it looked like Mr. Sorenson was going to slap Marie, the huge Russian fucker ghosted up behind Sang's father and did some pressure point thing that Mr. B. likes to use.

"This собаки is bad nudes, Ptitsa. I should put him out with the waste, nyet?" Raven asked while looking back and forth between Sang and Marie.

"He is bad news," Sang emphasized, "but we should probably put him in the bed instead of out with the trash."

"I didn't remake the bed yet," Marie told Sang while looking horrified, but then her face morphed into something smug.

Raven placed Mr. Sorenson onto the bare bed, then disappeared back outside again. Sang left to grab a glass of water for Marie, then seemed to want to ask questions. Instead of waiting for Sang to gather up her thoughts, she tells her what she found.

"There was empty alcohol bottles in her room. She shouldn't have been taking that with her medicine. The coroner that came to pick her up shook his head after spotting the bottles and medication near her. I sure as shit didn't get her booze, and she hasn't left the house since she got back. The alcohol had to have been left there by that asshole in there," Marie flung her hand out to indicate their parents' room.

Now, standing over the grave of Peanut's tormentor, I almost hope her father is responsible. The evidence compiled by the coroner and the police is still being worked. Once it is, I'm hoping Mr. Sorenson goes to prison for a very long time.

Someone clapping their hand over my shoulder pulls me out of my head. I realize the short funeral is over, and my brothers are guiding Sang away. I still don't know why she insisted she attend the funeral. That woman was awful. Sang simply states that her illness, the wrong medication, and her father's actions are what pushed an otherwise decent enough mother into being a monster.

"Oy Trouble. Some of us are going to Marée now. Come along. Lei and Adam asked about you the last time Vic was there. Actually no. They asked if I figured out how to duplicate your hair color. The fuckers are still going to want to fuck with your hair. Janet did ask about you though ," Gabe tempts Sang as they walk.

"I don't know. Don't I have to get ready for that thing later?" Peanut worries.

"What better way to get ready than making sure you're nice and relaxed?" I chime in.
