Chapter 2

" Career night" Ric told me and I sighed" I'm not going"

" Why, I thought you wanted to...what was it again, be a criminal investigator for the land of -" I tossed a ball of paper at him and he laughed.

" I was 9, drop it" I told him but he just laughed. The bell rang and class started. " Hi Izzy" someone told me and I smiled." Hi Caroline".

When school was over, I helped set up for career night...and by helped I mean I was forced to go.

" Come on, lighten up Izzy" Ric told me and I glared at where his voice came from." It's not like I can do any of this, the only thing I'm good at is-"

" Your creative, try the art table" he told me and I glared at him again before I heard him let out a sigh.

" Alright, alright, um...how about teaching?" he suggested and I raised an eyebrow. I heard a crash and we stopped." Stay here" he told me and I nodded.

I turned to ask someone where the exit was so that I could make a run for it, when I ran into someone." hey watch whe...." he trailed off and I sighed getting up." I'm so sorry" a familiar voice told me and I frowned" your the guy who tried to help me a few days ago"

" Yeah, I'm Tyler" he told me and I smiled" Izzy"

Rick appeared and we left but when we got home, he said that he needed to get something from the car and left. I sighed and went to bed but I couldn't go to sleep, I just felt like something was wrong or something was going to happen, and I wouldn't be able to stop it. I put in my headphones and let 'The Fray' help me tune out my thoughts.

A few days later, I sat with Caroline and some of her friends, that she introduced me to. Matt Donavan, Elena Gilbert, Bonnie Bennett and Stefan Salvatore." So what's it like, being blind" Caroline asked and I shrugged before I got an idea. " close your eyes" I told her.

" Ok...their closed"

" Now imagine, the darkest place and ignore the dots of light you can see when your eyes try to focus" I told her.

" Wow, how do you get used to that" She asked after a few minutes

" I barely remember what was it like to see, but I guess you get used to it" I sighed

" How old were you, if you don't mind me asking"  Stefan asked and I smiled sadly" I was four, my house burned down and I got trapped inside, the doctors said that some of the ash got in my eyes along with some of the fumes from the smoke"

" You said you were trapped inside? How did you get out" Matt asked

" That's the part I ask everyday, all I remember is someone walking through the flames. Next thing I know I'm sitting in the front yard." I told him with a shrug.

" And your parents?" Caroline asked sadly and I heard someone hit her in the arm, making me laugh.

" When the house was reduced to ash....they found their bodies in the living room, the police say that's also where the fire started" I wiped away a tear and smiled shaking my head." doesn't matter anyway, I was to young to really remember them"

" When did you meet Mr. Saltzman" Elena asked changing the subject." I was 7, so 11 years ago"

" Your 18?" Bonnie asked confused and I choked on my drink." Actually, my birthday is tomorrow" I told her and I heard Caroline gasp, along with several groans around the booth.

" You had to say it" Matt whined and I frowned before I heard a smack, along with Matt crying" ouch, what was that for?"

" We are celebratin-"

" I'm not really a party person" I told her reaching for my headphones." Brings up things I don't want to remember" I snapped getting up. I put in my headphones and I went toward Ric who I knew was at the bar only run right into someone and get someone all over me.

" Great" I mumbled and I heard a laugh" We need to stop meeting like this" I heard Jeremy tell me and I sighed shaking my head.

" This is just getting embarrassing though" I laughed using the napkins he handed me." It's not that bad" he told me. I rolled my eyes and I turned to walk off when he grabbed my hand. I frowned before I realized, I dropped my headphones." Thanks" I told him.

The next day, I sat talking with Ric." Alright, you know the rules, I'm locking the doors, don't let anyone in-"

" I know, I know, I'm not 12 anymore" I told him sarcastically and he hugged me" Happy Birthday, Izzy, check your bookshelf" he told me before leaving. My eyes widened and I went to check, I found a wrapped box and opened it to find a necklace with a card. I felt the lines where it pressed in and a smile crossed my face at what I found.

Happy birthday, Izzy. I may not replace the family you lost and I never hope to but, always know you are the daughter I never had.

I put the card up on the shelf and slipped on the necklace. I sighed and sat down to listen to music. There was a reason I didn't like to celebrate my birthday, it was because every year something happened. When I was 4, my parents died. When I was 5, I broke my ankle falling down the stairs. When I was 6, I almost drowned. 7, I was almost hit by a car.

8, I got hit in the head with softball.

You get the picture, after about my 14th birthday, I finally just gave up on the birthday thing.
