Chapter 20

“Go Ridgemont!” The cheerleaders yelled, trying to encourage our team to get a touchdown. There was 30 seconds left in the game, it was tied, and we had possession. Liam called out the play and I held my breath with wide eyes. Number 23 on the opposite team had been trying to take him down the whole game. I guess being quarterback had some disadvantages too.

The ball was snapped to Liam’s hands and he faked a pass. I watched as he nimbly picked his way through the mass of bodies and escaped into open field. It seemed like he was home free but 23 also broke free of the pack and started chasing him down the field.

Just as Liam stepped into the touchdown zone, he was slammed into the ground. I gasped and covered my open mouth with my hand. I watched in horror as a referee blew his whistle and 23 stood up. I waited to see Liam’s helmet pop up, but I didn’t. There was nervous mumbling from the crowd and I ran down the bleacher steps to the walkway.

I leaned over the rail, trying to get a better view of what was happening. Sofia ran up beside me, and put a comforting arm around my shoulders. “He’s alright. Just wait, he’ll be up in a couple seconds.” She tried to console me. I calmed down just a little bit, but my nerves shot up again when I saw Steve running to the small huddle that had formed around Liam.

He ripped his helmet off and glanced over at me right before he reached the group of coaches. I could only see glimpses of what was happening and I thought I saw Steve kneeling down beside Liam and saying something to him. What could he possibly be saying that would wake Liam up?

I discarded that thought when I saw Steve’s red hair pop up above the heads of the coaches and referees. He looked my way and winked. Winked? Why would he wink? There was a rush of movement from the huddle and a couple people bent down. When they stood up, I saw Liam in between them, being supported by their arms.

The crowd let out an enormous cheer while I slumped against Sofia, relieved. “I told you!” she sang. I looked up at her and rolled my eyes, but smiled all the same. My eyes stayed back to Liam as he was helped to our team’s bench. When I saw that he was okay and sitting down, I glanced at the clock and it read 4 seconds. I also noticed that we had 6 more points so I guess Liam’s touchdown counted, which made me happy.

Both teams set up for the field goal attempt and I paid no attention, all my focus on Liam. He seemed okay but sometimes you can’t tell with head injuries. His head was turned to watch the last of the game, making the man who was checking him out annoyed. I frowned, he should make sure he’s okay and then he can watch the game.

I could hear the game start again and a few moments later, cheering erupted around me. Liam stood up and yelled, but sat down quickly and hard. I bit my lip, worried.
