Masks

Week 11, Day 2:

"Here's a poem I wrote entitled Masks," Hunter is visibly shaking. He volunteered to read a poem for the first time this year in Writer's Forum. He hasn't let me see the poem yet but he said it was about Jakob. He didn't even ask me if I knew what happened, he just knows that I know enough. He takes a deep breath, lets it go, deep breath, and lets it go.

He begins.

"We throw around words just as if we would toss a ball to a friend.

'I'll love you until the very end'

'I hate you so much I want to torture you until your screams drown out my fury'

My eyesight is blurry

Tears clouding my eyes like the cloud over my broken heart.

Words are dangerous

You could make someone's day with only three words...

Or completely ruin it with four.

Words will hurt you

Some phrases are considered deep

Yeah, as deep as the cuts you put on an innocent person's arms.

Forcing them to wear long sleeves until the scars heal

The scars will never heal.

You rarely see older people with scars

Was it a happier generation?

Or did most of them not make it?

People wearing masks

To hide that they're hurt

"I'm fine."

Lies.

Since when did I make you cry in the rain?

Just leaving you there to soak up all the pain.

And when did I make you laugh at the dead of midnight

Or give you a fright

In the bright white light.

'Cause, honey, I've been in the dark all this time

For you have been wearing your mask

Your mask is hiding you from me

From me and the world

Because, darling, look at me, you mean the world to me can't you tell?

I will be up at two am if you need me.

Do you really not see?

You must be blind

Otherwise, God, you'll find...

You'll find me right by your side.

At your deathbed when you decided your razor wasn't good enough.

When I knew a few words wouldn't make it better

And there was no way to make it worse.

The phone is no longer ringing

And the mockingbirds are no longer singing

The blackbirds aren't flying

And the blue jays are crying.

All of this because...

Because you are dying."

Some freshmen look terrified, the rest of us are speechless. Do they think it's about him? And since when is Jakob like this? I'm more oblivious than I thought and these troubles carry me all the way to bed at night.

(A/N: Short chapter but I might do a double update or just update tomorrow, sorry if you guys thought this was going to be a really awesome chapter. I promise, the next ones will be full of crazy stuff. Hope you like the poem, I think it's fitting. Later Lovelies <3 )
