Chapter 38. Liaison

Cooperation, a term that majority of institutions lived by. It was only by joint effort, they said, that we would succeed. As with constant change, we couldn't escape from the responsibility of collaboration. We were bound by this in the workforce, in school, and in life. The body was subjected to this too, but sometimes the heart would have trouble cooperating with the mind, especially when what you were seeing wasn't making any sense.

I woke up in the middle of the night, not because I was feeling the need to pee, nor due to a bad dream. I woke up because my mind sensed that I wasn't safe. Earlier this morning, Dean J's private jet landed in the island. Vacation week was over. It was time to go back to our academics. My friends and I went to our separate dorms to settle in. Jade welcomed me with a huge smile, bearing gifts from her own trip. At least that was how I remembered it.

We were safe. We were secure. Why did I wake up shackled to a bed then? A bed that wasn't mine, in a room that I couldn't recognize. I stared helplessly at my wrist above me, handcuffed securely to the iron bed frame. I tugged at it repeatedly, feeling the cold, uncomfortable edges of the cuff dig on my skin. This was when my mind and heart began to speak in different terms. One said I was in trouble. The other said it was impossible.

Yet there I was, panicked. How did I end up this way? A sharp sound pierced through my eardrums. I cried out, desperately in need of covering my ears. Thankfully, it vanished in a second. "Welcome to the next challenge," Blue's voice rang in the air. The sound was everywhere, coming from a source that I couldn't pinpoint. Despite my situation, her familiarity eased my nerves.

"Right now, majority of you are awake," she said. "And if you're just coming from your beauty sleep, we apologize for the condition you're subjected to. Mars, if you're hearing this, I'm sorry that I wasn't able to warn—"

"Give me that," Red said, taking over. She cleared her throat. "A surprise challenge has been issued by our Headmaster. The people in the medical course meticulously planned this for the participants ahead of time. The theme is cooperation. You'll all understand what I mean after a short message from the Headmaster herself. Ma'am, the floor is yours."

"Wow Red, that's so formal of you," Headmaster said. She chuckled. "You know, you always remind me of an ex girlfriend. Damn you Beatrice! You didn't just break my heart, you took my watch when you moved out too. That was a very expensive watch."

"Headmaster, everyone is listening," Red said.

The headmaster sighed. "I know, and Beatrice if you're listening too, give me back the watch." She laughed. "Oh I hate long speeches. I'll just say that I'm back for good, and let the challenge begin."

The voices disappeared, as if sucked by a vacuum. Man, what was I going to do? I yanked at the handcuffs again. Flesh, skin, and bones were no match for the metals. I took note of my surroundings. Maybe something could help me escape. Okay, it was established long ago that I was in a bed. Was that a? Yes, that was definitely an IV stand beside me. The challenge was made by the medical course. Was I inside the hospital?

I was given no time to ponder on it. A transparent screen appeared inches from my nose. "Mars, can you hear me?" El said. Her face showed on the screen. She was so close that it made me dizzy. The screen seemed to understand me and moved a bit further. So much better. "I repeat, can you hear me?"

"I can see you too," I said. "Wait, how did this happen? You're not in the competition." The view zoomed away from her face. She was standing in a hallway, not far from double doors that looked like the entrance of the hospital. "You're in the challenge?!" I blurted.

"Yes love." She smirked. "I joined to help you. Long story short, each challenger will have a stand-in partner for this round. Headmaster must have thought you all deserve to rest, so she added us to do the dirty work. Aren't you glad that I did this for you though? Everyone in the Academy is watching. It gives us an opportunity to say that we're together now."
