~from (y/n)'s POV~
The next day, you felt well enough to try going back to school, although things were a little different.
Levi waited until you were ready before leaving, and after you came out, he turned away. "Listen, brat. Either walk next to me or in front of me."
"Are you worried about what happened last time? Because I'm sorry," you said, apologizing, and he just tched.
"Who's the one stupid enough to get kidnapped in broad daylight?"
Wincing but falling in step beside him, you smiled to yourself. When you accidentally got lost in your thoughts, he slowed his pace, keeping an eye on you at all times until you got to school.
"I'll be good from here," you said, smiling at him, but he just scowled.
"Who ever said I was your personal escort, brat? Walk wherever you choose," he snapped as he left, and you cringed before walking over to Hanji, you enveloped you in a suffocation bubble hug.
"Guess what?" she bubbled excitedly, and you smiled.
"What?"
"Well, our high school has been focusing on recruiting athletes lately, and we ended up getting a lot of guys for baseball, swimming, and-"
Someone bumped into you from behind when you weren't expecting it.
"Eeeek!" you screamed, a knee-jerk reaction that you still hadn't been able to overcome.
"Sorry! Sorry!" a kid with light brown hair apologized profusely, bowing low to you, and you winced, closing your eyes.
"It's okay! I'm sorry!" you replied, and soon, both of you were apologizing to each other over and over again.
"What did you do, Sakurai?" asked a strange-looking boy from behind the apologetic mushroom. He reminds me of a cat...
"It was my fault," you apologized, bowing, but Sakurai hurriedly bowed, saying, "No! It was my fault! I'm sorry!" and the two of you bumped heads, causing you to accidentally fall over.
"Ow," you said, wincing and patting your head delicately before looking up and...
Holy crap! A ton of tall guys! "Eeek!"
"-basketball," Hanji finished, laughing and turning to the recently transferred athletes from surrounding schools. "Sorry about that. My friend is really skittish, and she scares easily. I'm Hanji!"
"! Gomenasai!!" the first guy apologized yet again while the second guy grinned. "! But you can call me Koganei!"
"A-a-ackerman (y/n)," you stuttered out with your eyes shut yet again, but then you opened them as you felt someone grasping your hand.
"," he said as he helped you up, smiling, but he looked like he was trembling and pallid, and you tried to smile back at him, but your face was similarly pale and the two of you ended up looking like a pair of ghosts instead.
"Mayuzumi! You have to introduce yourself, too! Don't just go wandering off!" Koganei scolded, and a guy with really light greyish hair finally looked at you. "," he said softly, looking partially annoyed, and you nodded.
"N-nice t-to m-m-meet you all," you choked out, still shocked and slightly terrified, but then you were saved.
"Hey, (y/n)!" Eren called out, jogging over to you and Hanji. "Guess what-" Then he spotted the four guys surrounding you, and his eyes narrowed. "Are these guys bothering you, (y/n)?"
"Eek?! No!" you said quickly. "I just fell, is all...W-what was it that you wanted to say?"
"Oh, yeah! My friend is back from overseas!" he said, turning to call out to someone. "MIKASA!" He turned back to you. "You never met Mikasa, right?" He turned back to yell for her again, but she magically appeared at his elbow. "Oh, hey! There you are. (Y/n), this is my friend, Mikasa. Mikasa, meet (y/n)."
Is it just me, or is she glaring at me?
"I'm Levi's...friend..." She sent him a quick glance, but he wasn't catching the hint. "Mikasa. It's a pleasure to meet you."
"Uh huh..." you said, wobbling slightly from her sheer animosity that was all being directed towards you. "Um, likewise."
"Well, it's time to get to class," Eren said, not noticing Mikasa's death glares. "Mikasa, you're in first hour with (y/n) and me! Lucky."
Eren may have thought that the arrangement was lucky but...Ah! She's glaring at me again!
EEEEEeeeeek!!!
~from Levi's POV~
On the way home from school, I made sure that (y/n) was next to me, silently cursing myself for what had happened last time, but that wasn't the only reason I watched her.
I still hadn't completely processed the doctor's news...
~flashback~
"(Y/n) doesn't have very long to live," the doctor said, his eyes regretful, but there was nothing he could do. "We've tried various treatments, but her condition only gets worse, and there's only so much we can do. Right now, we're just trying to make sure that she's not in pain," he admitted gently.
"How much time does she have left?" I asked, searching his eyes.
"It's not up to me to tell you," he said. "That's something that only (y/n) wishes for herself to know, and nobody else. I'm afraid that I can't violate her trust like that."
I just nodded as though that was all right, but it wasn't all right, nothing was all right, why was she still smiling, damn it, why was she still
~end flashback~
...smiling. She was smiling as she walked, but she had to know that every footstep she took was one closer to her death, right? She had to know, right?
"Levi?" she asked, concerned as she looked up at me.
"What?" I instinctively snapped, wincing as she flinched slightly, but then she just smiled again.
"Nothing. It just looked like you were zoning out-" She was cut off as she accidentally bumped into someone-
"Hey!" he said, grinning at (y/n), who smiled back weakly. "It's you! (Y/n), right? From earlier! At school!"
She nodded, laughing slightly. "Koganei, right? And Furihata?" Koganei was ecstatic that she had remembered his name, while Furihata blushed and muttered to himself, trembling slightly and avoiding eye contact.
"Who are you two?" I asked, stepping closer to (y/n) and glaring at the two new freaks.
"I'm Koganei-kun!" the cat-ish one replied, smiling brightly, while the one called Furihata's muttering increased along with his trembling, and it looked like he started praying for mercy.
"Levi, these are...friends...from school," (y/n) said, looking to Koganei for confirmation, and he nodded enthusiastically.
"Yep! We ran into (y/n) this morning! Ah, sorry, (y/n). We've got some shopping to do, but we'll see you tomorrow, okay?!"
(Y/n) laughed and nodded, and Furihata waved stiffly before following after Koganei.
With a tch, I grabbed (y/n)'s hand and practically dragged her back home.
~from Koganei's POV~
"I wonder who the scary guy was," I mused out loud, and Furihata paled instantly.
"He's a demon," he replied. "A demon, just a really...short...one."
