Chapter 14

We all stared at the the Galra tech that fell from the sky. Tense. Waiting for something to pop out.
"Oh no." Pidge groaned.
"Please tell me there's not a giant monster in there. Please tell me it's empty! Or full of space candy. One of those two, either one is fine." Hunk rambled.
"I don't think it's a piñata Hunk."
"If it's the same kind of monster that attacked us on Arus, we already know how to beat it." Keith said.
"I doubt they'd send the same one." I said. But we got out the sword anyway, along with the shield.
"Hold your ground!" Shiro yelled. The thing opened, creating smoke and dust to come up. It opened to reveal a tall monster, with tentacle like arms. It's chest began to light up, then a green laser shot at us. We put up the shield, the laser pushing us back.
"It's not candy!"
"And it's not the same monster!"
"I told you it wouldn't be!"
"We need to draw it's fire from the Balmera's surface." Shiro yelled as we moved from the beam. It flew up and shot at us again,making us all groan. We flew out of the way of the beam, it made me nervous that it was shooting the Balmera. We went over and tried to swipe it with the sword. It moved out of the way and a laser at us, nearly knocking us over.
"Why do they always go for the chest?" I mumbled to my self, moving the controls. We flew up and away from the monster, making it follow us. It shot another beam from it's chest, we blocked it again.
"We can't hold out!"
"My lion is weakening! If the shield sustains structural damage, we're done for!"
"Pidge is right!"
"Oh Pidge is right. I'm the one who said we can't hold out."
"Lance, now is not the time." I rolled my eyes, why am I friends with him.
"Lance watch your footing!" We suddenly started falling backwards, the shield breaking in half. We all groaned when we made impact.
"Okay, team Voltron, disband." So we did.
"Everyone, evasive manuvers! I can't shoot us all at once." As soon as Shiro said that, lasers blasted from it's arms, the lasers going everywhere.
"Okay, it can do that too." We flew around, trying our best not to get shot. Then, a blue blast came out and shot it. I looked over to see the castle, aiming at it. It looked at the castle, and shot at it.
"Keith, Korra draw it's fire. I'm coming in from above." Shiro ordered.
"Roger."
"On it." We flew over to it, and began shooting back at it, drawing it's attention to us. We went on opposite directions to try and confuse it. Shiro began to fly in, but the monsters eye, looked over and shot at him.
"We need to find it's blind spot." Lance said.
"I don't think this thing as a blind spot." Pidge said.
"It has a thousand eyes." I finished.
"Laser eye! Laser eyes!" Hunk screamed as he was avoiding the lasers.
"What do we do? Fighting this thing is like fighting an entire fleet at once!" Pidge said, I agreed.
"I think we gotta aim for those laser eyes and take them out." Keith said, as he flew over next to me and Pidge.
"We'll cover you from here!" Allura said, and shot another beam at it.  The monster turned around and shot almost all of his lasers at the castle. I could hear Coran freaking out about the castle.
"We're taking heavy fire up here! We're in trouble!"
"Princess, pull back! Get out of range now!" Shiro said.
"We will not abandon you."
"You're not abandoning us. We're about to pull back anyway."
"We are?"
"We can't hold out. We have to. Lions to the mine shafts! It's the only place the monster can't get us."
"Roger that!"
"Heading into orbit."
I followed Keith down into one of the shafts.  I landed with Hunk, Shiro and Keith and we allgot out of our lions. We ran over to Shay and more Balmerans.
"What is happening?"
"There's a monster up there that Zarkon sent to destroy us." Keith explained.
"A monster? Will Zarkon's savagery ever abate? Perhaps our people were never ment to be set free." Shay said sadly.
"Shay, don't give up hope. Zarkon's power grows with every planet he conquers, but he's weakened by every being that fights back." Hunk said.
"Fight back against a monster like that? How?"
"I don't know but we can beat it. Tell her Keith." Hunk glanced over.
"Can we?" Keith glanced at me. I shrugged.
"Yes we can! This is our first mission and we're not going to fail. We can beat it. We just need time to make a plan." Shiro said.
"See? Told you we can. Thanks Shiro." We were cut off by a rumbling, and the Balmera moaning.
"Uh, you guys feel that over there?" I asked through the PA.
"Yeah we feel it." Lance said.
"It's that sound again. What is it?" Pidge asked. I heard a cracking, I looked down the see the ground cracking open. The Balmerans looked down at it sadly.
"The great noise comes from the Balmera itself. Our home crumbles beneath our feet. The Balmera is dying." Rax said.
"Coran, Allura are you there?" Shiro said suddenly.
"Shiro, we're here."
"The Balmera-"
"We already know. Our scanners are showing the life energy draining from the Balmera." Coran cut off Shiro.
"How does that happen?" Pidge asked, Shiro pulled up a scan of the Balmera.
"Removing crystals from the Balmera is like removing a vital part of the great beast. The Balmera needs time to regenerate to stay healthy. But the Galra's greed must have cost this noble Balmera it's life." Coran explained.
"So what's going to happen?" Hunk asked.
"It's core will collapse. Destabilizing the entire skeletal structure. Anything or anyone remaining on the Balmera at that point will be crushed into dust." I gasped silently.
"How much longer till the core collapses?"
"Probably a matter of hours. The mighty organsem willingly gives itself to all, but not all will return it's kindness."
"Then our time is short. We'll evcuate the planet. We need to get all the Balmerans to the Castle Of Lions before the planet implodes." Allura said.
"Okay, that sounds like a good plan, but how on Earth do you plan on landing the Castle with that monster thingy outside? Hunk asked.
"You'll need a distraction."
"We'll engage the beast with our lions. With it distracted, Allura and Coran will land the Castle and load all the citizens." Lance cut off Shiro.
"OR! We could load Balmerans in our lions few at a time and shuttle them into the ship. No engaging ferocious laser eye guy. How long will that take?"
"Days. Weeks?"
"We only have hours." Keith said.
"Look, we don't need to beat it. We just need to bait it away from the ship. Provoke and evade." Shiro said.
"Okay, here's the thing. I'm worried that we're going to be really, really good at the provoking and then really bad at the evading part. But if this is what it takes to save Shay and her people. I'm in." Hunk said.
"Can you contact the other Balmerans?" Keith asked Shay.
"I can, but I know not what they'll say. Leave our planet? Our home?"
"It's the only option. I'm coming down." Allura said. I heard Coran tell her not to, but knowing Allura, She'll come.
"You're coming down? That thing will spot your pod and blow it to pieces." Pidge said.
"Let me worry about that. You just focus on keeping the creature distracted."
So we got back in our lions, and flew out of the mines. It looked over at Pidge and Lance, all four of us shot at it while it was distracted. We we're back in the routine of avoiding the lasers. I heard it growl, I turned to see it flying towards us.
"Okay we provoked, time to evade!" Hunk yelled.
"Princess, we've lured it way. It time." Shiro said.
"I'll contact you all when I'm on the ground."
"Is that Allura?" Lance suddenly asked. I looked over to see a small dot hurdling towards the Balmera. Wait, that tiny dot is Allura. The monster turned a laser eye towards Allura.
"We gotta protect the Princess!" I yelled. I flew over and blocked the shot, which means I got shot. I groaned, that actually hurt.
"Korra don't be stupid." Keith said, I could hear the worry in his voice.
"Sorry, sorry."
"I'm on the ground."
"Hurry! I don't know how much longer we can hold this thing off."

"Castle Of Lions coming in! Paladins, how are you holding up?"
"Yikes!" I yelled as I barrel rolled out of the way of a laser, nearly knocking into Keith. Who seems to not want to leave my side.
"I think we got him pretty distracted. Are the Balmerans in position?" Keith asked.
"They're making their way to the top." Allura said. I could see the castle landing. We flew near the ground, the creature shooting at the surface.
"Every shot weakens the Balmera. Have you evacuated? What's happening?" Hunk asked.
"The Balmerans are trapped. Just keep the beast distracted." Coran said.
"Uh, do you want is the distract it by dying? Because that's what's going to happen." Hunk said.
"Guys, you remember when I said we didn't have to beat it?" Shiro asked.
"Yes, I remember that."
"Well we might have to beat it."

"Who knew my live would come to avoiding lasers." I said, as I shot at the creature.
"Guys, this isn't working. We'll never take this thing down with our lions." Keith said.
"Forming Voltron didn't work either." I said.
"Not without finding some way to shoot those laser eyes at once." Lance said.
"Guys! Guys somethings happening here! I think there's a way to take down all those laser eyes at once." Hunk said.
"Well what is it?"
"Do you remember how Voltron formed that sword with Keith's bayard? I think my lion's telling me the same thing."
"Are you sure?"
"Let's find out! Form thingy!"
"It didn't work!"
"Cause we didn't form Voltron yet, genius." I said.
"Oh yeah, I know."
"Guys what ever we're planning on, let's hurry up and do it." Pidge said. The creature turned and saw the castle, it began walking to it.
"We've gotta defend the castle. Every one follow me, form Voltron!"
*Yet another Voltron forming scene*
The creature got ready to shoot a laser at the castle, but we shot at it to stop it. Voltron formed a big gun, like Hunk's and put it on it's shoulder. So that's what Hunk's does. The creature formed this big laser, we both shot at the same time. We grunted as we tried to get the laser to go back, and shoot at it.
"It's not enough." Shiro yelled.
"We'll have to try something else!" Hunk yelled. We moved out of the way, the beam nearly hitting the castle. I could practically feel Coran's glare. We flew away, the laser following us. We were looking at the thing, when a scan of it appeared on my screen.
"You guys seeing this?" Hunk asked.
"Roger that."
"Let's see what this thing can do engage!" We shot the gun, multiple lasers coming out and hitting the creature. Causing it to fall back. It stood still. Suddenly, a wave a blue light came from the castle, covering the Balmera.
"Guys, look!"  The blue light covered the whole Balmera, then disappeared. The creature growled and got up, ready to attack. It shot it's chest laser, we moved out of the way once again. We fly over to it, and Keith punches it, hard. It goes flying back. The creature landed, the lights on it turning off. Thank God that's over. We disbanded and flew to the castle. Allura was passed out in Shay's arms. So she must have done this. We all landed and ran over.
"Did it work?" I heard her ask.
"Yes, the Balmera lives, and it thanks you." The ground suddenly rumbled, we looked up to see the creature getting up.
"Are you kidding me?" I said, annoyed. It got ready to shoot the castle. Before it could do anything, crystals came up from the ground and covered the creature.
"No way."
"The Balmera just saved us." Coran said.
"Look at the crystals." Allura said. We looked down to see little crystals forming in the ground, covering the Balmera.
"Who's a good Balmera? You are. Who ate the big monster? You did. Yes you did. Yes you did." We stared at Hunk.
"Dude, what are you doing?"
"What? It's alive, and it wuvs my scwatches." Hunk said, like he was talking to a dog. Keith pinched the bridge of his nose.

"Whatcha doing?" I turned to see Keith walking up behind me.
"Enjoying the view." I said, turning back to see the glowing crystals. He hummed and stood next to me.
"Keith, can I ask you a question?" I said, after a while.
"Shoot."
"Do you...do you think we can beat Zarkon." He turned.
"What do you mean? Of course we can."
"Well, I just. I don't know I guess I kinda doubt myself. I mean I'm just the torso of Voltron, I don't do much." I shuffled my feet.
"Korra look at me." I looked over, seeing his usual serious face, he grabbed my shoulders, forcing me to keep eye contact.
"You do, do a lot. You help Shiro control Voltron, you help with the weapons. Not to mention you are an amazing pilot. So to answer your question, yes we can beat Zarkon, with you." I blushed a bit and smiled. It wasn't much, but it made me feel so much better.

Random Korra fact of day: she's allergic to roses and anything rose scented. So much for the bunch of roses on the first date. (Hey Keith, her favorite flowers are lilies.)
