"I am never flying again!" (Y/N) cried defeatedly as she threw her helmet to the ground.
Her entire squadron had died, and it was all because of the fact that she had neglected to ensure that her squad took off with everyone else. They had left the hangar early, and it had just so happened to be when an Imperial patrol was passing through.
Three pilots- good pilots and even better people- had been shot down almost immediately. This had prompted others to leave to help them, and so it wasn't just her squadron that had taken a beating. Now, everyone's blood was on her hands.
"What a joke. I knew you weren't cut out for this job, but really (L/N)?" Rainy Greem, a member of Indigo Squadron, said as (Y/N) passed her. The humanoid woman had an antagonistic grin on her face as she leaned against her X-Wing. She flipped her green hair over her shoulder as if hoping that it would be taken as some sort of display of superiority, however she soon found herself being ignored as usual.
"Not in the mood, Greem," (Y/N) sighed.
Rainy laughed darkly and quickly fell into step with (Y/N). "You know, I heard that I'll be getting a promotion soon. With that extra leverage behind me, I'm sure I'll have no problem getting you sent down to something more...suitable for someone like yourself. Bathroom cleaner, perhaps?"
(Y/N) sighed, exhaustion and grief threatening to overcome her senses. In spite of the feeling that her heart was being torn inside of her chest, she pressed on. She refused to show weakness in front of Rainy.
Hearing no response from (Y/N), Rainy suddenly stopped. She gripped (Y/N)'s forearm before she could escape and turned her around to face her. A dark shadow had fallen over her features, one that (Y/N) was not used to seeing. "Don't think that your little relationship with Skywalker will get you out of this one, (L/N)."
Of course it wouldn't- she didn't expect it to. Just because she had been seeing Luke Skywalker for the past few months didn't give her a leg up over anything, contradictory to what most people thought.
Making it appear as though she was unfazed, (Y/N) ripped her arm out of Rainy's hand. Wordlessly, she walked away, leaving the childish woman to bask in her anger alone.
. . .
"What have I done?" (Y/N) asked herself as she entered her quarters, the door closing itself behind her.
She looked around and took in the grey coloring of every bit of furniture that had been provided for her. She laughed bitterly as realization hit that it almost resembled a prison cell that she had once been held in the first time that she had been arrested in the name of the Rebellion. After what she had allowed to happen, she firmly believed that she deserved nothing less.
(Y/N) sighed and sat down on her bed, unable to fight back her tears as they fell steadily. The loss of her squadron hit her at full as she fell onto the pillow and wept.
. . .
"(Y/N)?"
The voice was distant, and at first (Y/N) could not bring herself to even consider who it reminded her of.
The call was echoed several times before (Y/N) finally opened her eyes. There was no light coming in from the crack between the wall and the edge of the shades, meaning that she had slept through the remainder of the day. Just one more strike against her as he had surely missed several meetings.
"Come in," she groaned as she sat up.
She watched as Luke Skywalker walked into her room. A concerned look resided on his face as he asked, "Where have you been? I haven't seen you all day."
