"Don't go too far. You and Poe have to report in for a mission first thing in the morning," chided General Leia Organa as her holographic image flickered in the dark cockpit.
(Y/N) Solo rolled her eyes, smiling in spite of herself. "Mom, you don't have anything to worry about. We'll only be gone for an hour or so."
"General, you have nothing to be afraid of," Poe Dameron's voice crackled over the comm channel as he joined the conversation. Despite not being able to see his face, (Y/N) could tell that he was smiling. "Have I ever put (Y/N) in a dangerous situation before?"
Leia frowned. "I'm not going to answer that," she muttered sourly. Poe erupted with laughter from his starfighter, his boisterous guffaw filling the silence for a brief moment before Leia disconnected his comm. A satisfied smirk grew on her face as the void was once again silent.
"You're both lucky that he's cute," Leia said as she shook her head. It was (Y/N)'s turn to laugh at one of her mother's comments.
"Honestly though, we'll be fine. I promise," (Y/N) said reassuringly. Leia simply nodded her acceptance before her voice and image faded, allowing the light from the stars to illuminate (Y/N)'s controls before her.
Several moments of silence passed before Poe finally regained his ability to speak through the comm channel. "She cut me off! Can you believe that?" he asked, clearly aghast.
"To be fair, I think she's still warming up to the idea of us being together," (Y/N) reasoned. Poe hummed in thought.
"And here I was thinking that she liked me."
"She does, Poe. She really does. But you have to understand why she's so protective over me..." (Y/N) trailed off, unable to finish her sentence as her grief took a hold of her once again, stifling the sound of her voice.
"You're all she has left," Poe finished quietly.
It was true that (Y/N)'s twin brother, Ben Solo, had turned to the Dark Side and had taken up the ridiculous name Kylo Ren. It was also true that Ben had made the decision to kill their father in cold blood only several weeks earlier. He believed it to be an essential part of giving himself to the Dark Side of the Force, which was what had drawn him away from their family. It was for this exact reason that (Y/N) had decided to hand the lightsaber that she had once taken so much pride in over to her mother, vowing to never touch its hilt again. Since she had watched her brother fall, (Y/N) had forced herself to ignore the calls of the Force. She feared that she would also succumb to the relentless pull of the Dark Side. She had seen how easily it had tempted Ben, and she refused to allow the same to happen to her.
"(Y/N), do you see that?"
She snapped out of her thoughts and returned her focus to her piloting. Scanning the sobering sight of eternal space around her, she caught sight of a small grey dot floating a good distance ahead of her and Poe. It appeared to be a small ship of some kind, and it was clear that there was something wrong with the pilot. The ship jerked violently, although (Y/N) couldn't see anything wrong that was glaringly obvious with the spacecraft.
"(Y/N), I think that's a TIE," Poe said, urgency rising in his voice.
She squinted, hoping to make out the structure of the ship to confirm Poe's theory. Her blood turned cold as she realized that he was correct, meaning that there were sure to be more of the horrid things nearby. Where there was one TIE, there were sure to be a thousand more on their way.
