Chapter 16

B r e n d a

"Any news?"

"No, however, we are doing everything we can." My shoulders sink at his words. Great. Just another dead end. "Brenda, please. Try not to worry. I've already spoken to your parents and like I've told them, please be patient. I know this is hard, but that's my only advice for now."

I let out a sigh. Patient. Such a bitter word right now. "...Very well. I should get going."

"Alright, also about today. Things should be alright, but tell her to careful, and wish her a happy birthday from me as well."

I nod, even if he can't see me and hang up.

--

Ever since Linda told me what happened in the club that night, including the conversation she had with Luke, and not to mention that unknown call.  I've been thinking a lot lately. It feels as if the second she takes a turn to a normal life- as normal for her as it can be- things go wrong. But not today. At least for today I want her to forget. We need the distraction after all, something to get our mind off what's been happening and what could. And even though it might be painful at first,I know she'll love it.

I quickly head upstairs, passing my parents who give me a wink and gesture for me to hurry up.

Shes still tangled in her bed sheets when I open the door- her wild hair spread out on a fluffy white pillow.

"Linda wake up." I gently shove her shoulder when I reach her and remove the covers.

"Linda." I shove a little harder.

"Linda, wake up!"  I expected her to jump out the bed at my shout.  Instead she only stirs and sinks further into her pillow- pulling the cover higher up her body to cover her ear.

"Linda get up. Come on!" I sit on the bed beside her and shove her again, causing her body to shift away from me- eyes still closed.. Damn, nothing's changed. Still a heavy sleeper. Not, that I don't blame her.

All well, not today.

I carefully reach over her and grab the water spray she has on her desk and unscrew the lid.

"Sorry..."

She sits up fast- gasping and soaked. "what the f-". One second she was on the bed the next on the floor.

"Oops," I try to contain my laughter as she pokes her head up from the other side of the bed, her eyes narrowing on me "Really?! On a Saturday- with a water spray?" she gestures to the bottle in my hand and tries get up.

"You better start run-"

My parents slowly walk in, cake in hand, and a smile on their faces. However, the second their eyes take in the scene before them they stop short and curiously stare at Linda who still on the grand- hair and shirt damp.

"Brenda, really."

I glance at mom and shrug. "She wouldn't wake up, you told me to hurry to."

Mom shakes her head but steps closer towards Linda who eyes the cake for a bit.

 "Happy birthday Linda."

"Surprise," I say sticking out my hand to help her get up. She looks at me before sighing and taking my hand. It's a good thing my parents are back otherwise I would have been Linda's punching bag if I had woken her up like this.

"Are you okay?" I ask as she looks back at the small cake still resting in my moms hands before glancing at her bare fingers.

"Yeah, sorry" she clears her throat and she smiles. "It not every day you wake up like that." She gives me a playful shove but there is something in her eyes that slightly goes against the smile on her lips.
