Life in New York was pleasantly freeing for Elena. She met new people, experienced new situations, and she could feed on the street in the evening quite blithely because she always bumped into some stragglers in the dark side streets. She trained her bite - drink - compel strategy and she was proud of herself.
She found a job in an archive where she spent the free moments by reading legends and hypotheses about vampires and laughed at how silly they were. The idea of her having to sleep in a coffin was simply hilarious.
She lived in a shared apartment with her long-time friend, who used to be a decent girl but New York made her a first-class party girl. It didn't last long and she carried Elena away right into the whirl of fun. Elena was enjoying every minute of this problem-free life and little did she think of her home and everyone she had left there.
She couldn't completely escape it, though. It was her birthday - it was her third week in New York, so she wasn't planning a return yet at all. But when everybody called her up and wished her happy birthday, their friendly voices were a painful reminder of how much she missed her friends.
She was just about to open a bottle of vodka with her wild new roommate to celebrate the big day when Klaus rang her.
'Sorry, I've gotta take this,' Elena apologised and answered the call.
'Uhm,' he cleared his throat. 'Happy birthday.'
'Thanks,' she peeped.
'So when... When are you coming back? So that we can celebrate it together, you know.'
'I'll stay here for now,' replied Elena. 'New York has charmed me. I don't want to go away from here.'
'And what about your school? What about your friends? What about me?'
'You can manage a little bit longer without me.'
'I'll fly over to you.'
'Please, don't,' she sighed. 'You know why I've moved here. To have the peace and space for thinking.'
'And I gave you that. But it's been taking too long. When will you know what things are like between us?' Klaus kept attacking her impatiently.
'I need more time,' mumbled Elena. Her roommate was calling her loudly from another room. 'I'm sorry, I've gotta go. I'll call you later.' And she hung up.
She didn't know when exactly the later would happen, if ever. For now, she didn't want to promise anything neither to Klaus nor to herself. Nothing except for drinking to today!
