A/N: message me for requests or anything along those lines :))

The sparkling blue material of the dress took my breath away as I studied my reflection. The princess style dress was perfect, exactly how I'd imagined it my whole life. I barley recognised myself.

"(Y/N)?" Ponyboy called out from outside of the changing room.

"Coming." I responded smoothing down the front of the elegant dress.

Stepping out of that cramped changing room I felt like a princess in the stories my mom use to read to me before bed every night. Gosh I missed that, I missed her. My chest ached for her to be here with me, we'd planned years before to go prom dress shopping, just us two girls. At least I had my brothers.

"What do you guys think?" I asked giving a dramatic turn.

"It's really pretty (y/n)." Soda grinned leaning lazily against a far wall in the dress store.

"Really pretty." Ponyboy agreed.

"Darry?" I questioned my eldest brother, he was on his lunch break and kept nervously glancing at his watch.

"You look just like mom." Darry spoke gently, stunning me for a second. I turned my gaze towards the numerous mirrors surrounding me and did a double take of my reflection. It took me a moment but I eventually saw what Darry meant. I noticed the similarities in the way I stood, the shape of my face, the slope of my nose, the curve of my smile, even in the way my hair was styled. A messy mop of curls, just the way mom wore it.

Darry stepped closer to me and wiped away the tears I hadn't noticed had started falling.

"This is the dress." I said softly, afraid my voice would crack if I spoke too loudly. "What do you guys think?"

Ponyboy and Sodapop had snuck up behind Darry and were both grinning from ear to ear.

"I think it's perfect for you (y/n)." Ponyboy answered, Sodapop nodded in agreement.

"Oh! It looks gorgeous on you!" The high pitched voice of the owner of the shop filled the room as she entered. "Will you take it?"

"How much?" I asked smiling gleefully at my reflection.

"$800." The air suddenly felt like it was being ripped from my lungs and my body felt numb as I looked at the shock on my brothers faces.

"Thank you," I managed out, "but I can't afford it."

Returning gloomily to the dressing room I feverishly began removing the dress as it felt heavier than it had before. There was no way in my wildest dream I'd be able to afford the dress.

My heart felt heavy leaving the store and walking home alongside my brothers who tried their best to cheer me up. I'd never get to go to prom, I wouldn't get to look like my mom or have that last memory of her.

~~~
The night of prom had finally rolled around and I was lazing miserably on the couch watching our static filled TV cut in and out.
Surprisingly none of my brothers were home, which was odd considering they promised to spend the night with me because I was so upset over missing out. None of the other boys were over either which wasn't unheard of but definitely not normal.
I reached for the channel control on the TV as I decided the static filled Western movie just wasn't what I wanted to watch. My channel surfing was interrupted by the front screen being ungracefully slammed open, greatful for company I turned to see Johnny standing there, in a suit.
"What are you all dressed up for Johnny cake?" I asked admiring the outfit and his dark hair combed neatly back.
"Uh your brothers asked me to." He replied shifting uncomfortably.
"Why?" I questioned only more confused.
Johnny's attention turned from me to the porch before he said, "She's not dressed." Darry and Sodapop stumbled in and stared at me confused.
"Alright what the hell is going on?" I demanded, hands on my hips.
"Why did we give Ponyboy the job of telling her?" Darry asked Soda. "That boy can't use his head."
"(Y/N) we got the dress!" Sodapop explained, ignoring Darry and dragging me towards mine and Darrys shared bedroom. Hanging from our wardrobe was the blue dress I so desperately wanted and loved.
"How?" Was all I could manage to ask without crying.
"Mom started saving ages ago, we found the money when we were looking for her prom dress. We thought you could wear hers instead but we found the money with a note instead." Darry explained from the doorway.
"We just had to come up with the rest of the money which is why we didn't tell you in case we couldn't." Soda added.
"That's why you've both been working so late!" I exclaimed, shocked at what my brothers had done for me. They nodded in reply.
"Thank you Darry, thank you Soda so much! But you didn't need to do this." I said throwing my arms around the both of them.
"Yes we did, you deserve one night like this and mom and dad wanted this for you." Darry explained returning the hug.
"Now don't start crying, get dressed or you'll be late." Soda grinned, "Johnny has agreed to be your date for the night."
"But no touching each other except for photos and slow dances." Darry teased.
"I promise," I giggled in response, "wait, where's Ponyboy?"
"He was supposed to be here and tell you where to find the dress but I have no idea where he's gotten to." Darry sighed rubbing his temples. All three of us heard the door slam open and the hurried footsteps down the hallway as if in answer to Darry.
"And where have you been?" Darry asked accusingly as Ponyboy's red face appeared in the doorway.
"I'm sorry, I got held up at school and ran straight here as soon as I was done." Pony gasped out all in one breath.
"You almost ruined the whole night Pony!" Darrys voice slowly began to rise.
"Darry, it's okay." I interrupted. "I found the dress in the end. Now get out so I can. Get dressed."
After wiggiling into the dress, fixing my hair  into a sleek bun, quickly practicing in the heels and adding a little makeup I admired myself in the mirror. It was the first time in a long time I felt pretty.
"Wow." All four boys chorused as I stepped out into the living room.
"You look beautiful." Johnny piped up, still standing in the doorway.
"Let me repeat myself," Darry began looking directly at Johnny, "No touching except for photos and slow dances."
"Unless absolutely necessary." Soda quickly added sending me a wink.
"Leave us alone." I complained jokingly, rolling my eyes.
"Look after her Johnny." Pony called out as Johnny and I walked out the front door.
"I sure will!" He hollered in response.
