October 31st, Almost two months later, Halloween, Waterfront park
Alex and Anita walked with linked elbows through the waterfront park as dusk set in. Every year the city transformed the waterfront into a Halloween haunt; there were small games to play for candy, a petting zoo, a talent show, and even a contest for the best costume.
Alex and Anita had given up hope of winning the contest when they were forced to wear their jeans under their tutu's instead of their leggings- it was straight up too cold for leggings! Over their sweaters they had fairy wings, and they had sprinkled glitter over their faces- slightly less spectacular then they had planned, but hey; they were warm!
Alex looked more like a typical fairy what with her pale skin, long orange hair and freckles, while Anita looked more original with her east Indian features.
"I can't believe Amanda and Mike will be away for almost a month! How is our team going to be any good at the first Quiz meet!?" Anita complained- she had the competitive spirt of a lioness.
"Don't worry- Mike and Amanda will keep memorizing their verses- as team captain, I'll make sure of it!" Alex assured her friend as they made their way to the stage where the winner of the costume contest would soon be announced.
"And besides- it's not like they had a choice!" Alex said as someone dressed as a pirate walked past them, "Their Grandmother is dying!"
Anita went into a sulky silence for a moment- it didn't last long, "They get to stay for a month in Germany! Hanging out- getting out of school! They don't even know their Grandma!"
Alex laughed, "Yeah, that's why their staying a month! To get to know her-"
"Before she dies!?" Anita cut in unsensitively.
Alex rolled her brown eyes- Anita could be so blunt!
Just then a man running a ring toss called out to them, "Come on Orange and try your luck!" Anita giggled at the man's forwardness- but Alex didn't appreciate it. She sped up their pace till they were past- as if on cue her low level migraine grated into her head; what a pain! She had never had troubles with migraines before a few months ago- but now it was like she had a constant one- and it seemed to get worse whenever she was doing anything important or fun!
The girl's stopped on the path to one side of the stage and watched as they got ready to announce the contest winners.
"Don't look to our right," Anita warned suddenly- of course Alex almost did though, "I think those two have been following us!" Anita said tightly
Taking a deep breath Alex turned her head and casually looked around; the dusk was getting darker and people with all kinds of costumes were walking up and down the path, or standing about watching the stage.
"Who?" she asked, trying to ignore her pounding head.
Anita glanced to their right then snapped her head back, "Oh- they're looking right at us! It's the tall guy dressed like Zorro, and the girl in the cat women costume."
Alex tried looking again- this time she saw them, standing in the darker shadow of a tree, an enormously tall guy stood in a striking Zorro costume, beside him- not even at shoulder height, was a girl in all black and a cat woman mask and ears. Through the dusk, and deep shadows that their masks cast it was hard to tell- but it certainly looked like they were watching Anita and her.
Alex shivered- not from the cold, "Do you know them?" she asked looking back to the stage.
"I don't think so- HA! It's not Nicky and Tracy that's for sure! You don't know them?" Anita asked, with a tone full of teenager excitement.
Alex bit her lip and remembered that her phone was close by in her hoodie pocket, "No- other then Mike and Nicky I don't know any boys- you know that!"
"If we get kidnapped- my parents will never let me go to this sort of thing again!" Anita's voice didn't sound like she was scared- but Alex was starting to feel uncomfortable.
Down the path came a young woman who looked collage aged to Alex, she wore a smart leather jacket and walked confidently in heels that added a full three inches to her already tall form. She sported a stylish afro and heavy eye makeup.
Alex was about to forget about her when out of the corner of her eye, she saw the woman go up to the two mysterious figures in the shadows. Alex felt her skin prickle as the three seemed to have a whispered conference- then all three looked up to her and Anita!
Alex swallowed hard and tightened her arm around Anita's.
The woman in heels moved on, while the other two continued to stare in her direction.
She and Anita were safe- right!? There were tons of people around- they both had their phones. 'I'm over reacting!' Alex told herself, even still she found herself gripping her phone through her hoodie pocket.
"Code name- Irons! Come on up Irons!" Alex hadn't even noticed that the contest winners had been called to the stage for the past few minuets- and now the #1 winner had been announced. The crowd in front of the stage clapped and cheered- but Alex's heart rate spiked, along with her migraine, as the dark figure dressed as Zorro started walking towards them.
As if to intensify the moment, the stage light's flickered. Alex held her breath- her head felt like it would explode! Zorro walked up to them... then continued on to the stage, his masked face remaining a mystery.
Alex breathed again- of course; he and the girl hadn't been staring at them- but the stage!
Alex could kick herself for how scared she had been- over nothing- but then it happened; Zorro lifted a gloved hand to acknowledge the crowd and around his wrist was a purple band. Alex would know that wrist band anywhere- she had one just like it! She had gotten one over a month ago on the first day of school...
fun fact- I've never gone trick or treating! My family always went out for ice cream on Halloween- do you have any traditions for Halloween?
