Donghyuck always did a lot after school, but he never rushed out when classes were over.
He'd stay with Chenle and Jisung while they wait for the bus to go home. He'd then head over to work a few hours at a small cafe, he needed a little money if he wanted to keep himself occupied as much as possible so he wouldn't spend so much time at home. He practically only goes back to sleep, shower and keeping himself clean.
He could also just stay at the school's study space and get some work done...
Nah.
Donghyuck always worried about people he knew coming at the cafe he worked at, which inevitably happened, but they were all nice about it and never made a fuss. They envied him for being so carefree about his studies, but he was really just doing some school work when there was no customer, which happens often at a small, nearly hidden cafe.
He works till the place closes and heads to an internet cafe. The boy would come across Jaemin sometimes, skateboarding in the lively streets at night. He'd slap the back of his head and urge him to go home.
"You're always overworking"
"Me? I'm not Mark, Jaemin"
"Maybe not for school, but outside you do all you can to keep yourself from going home. You can't-"
Donghyuck sighed "Yes I can do this forever, I've done it for months. So what if I keep falling asleep in class? Everyone knows I'm a troublemaker anyway..."
Only his friends are able to see a more sensitive and vulnerable side to him, and though he's always saying things that might offend the other party, they always hurt more when it comes from an exhausted Donghyuck, not because they're hurt, but because they feel a sad sympathy towards him. Under all that mask of anger and trust issues, he only has a few people that he deems close... and they're not even blood related, so will they always stay by his side? It's something he has thought about a lot when he has spent so many nights out by himself.
Jaemin stared at him sadly before quickly shifting the look into his eyes to light up the atmosphere. He patted the behind of his shoulder "You spend most of your time at the internet cafe, let's go to the arcade"
Donghyuck reversed to his usual behavior "And I thought you wanted me to go home?" He said snarly as he followed the skateboarder behind.
"We both know you're not gonna do that any time soon, even if Mark told you" Though he could only see the back of his head, he could tell Jaemin wore a smirk at the mention of Mark.
"Hey don't mention him so easily like that! What if I randomly yelled out you're totally whipped for Jeno?"
"Who isn't though?"
The boys spent a few hours in the arcade before leaving when it was nearly empty. It was getting late and Donghyuck almost felt bad for keeping Jaemin with him... but then again he chose to go with him so that wasn't really his problem.
Donghyuck walked at a slow yet normal pace when he headed home. He'd spend his time contemplating about what he wanted to do in the future, like buying an apartment. Should he own a pet? Should he get a cat or a dog? What about a rabbit or a hamster? But he'd have to find a place where they would allow pets inside...
Then he wondered about Mark, and how he's also slowly getting closer to the other two in his small group of friends. They always seemed so unapproachable, but he guessed that they all come as a package, that if he was gonna befriend Mark, he'd have to deal with Mina and Seungwoo too. They don't look that bad now that he thought about it.
And god, Mark, jesus, that boy...
Who thought he could be so dumb... but so cute and gullible while looking like a whole puppy when he stares at him whenever he makes an intelligent remark about their current project... And that stupid laugh GOD who knew he'd fall for that boy after tricking him on his first day of school...
Before he knew it, he was standing in front of his house and pushing the gate open, before closing it behind him and walking past the garden and in front of the entrance. He quietly unlocked the door and entered the silent house, not making any noise while going up to his room.
His room was the only one with a lock, because his siblings always stole his stuff, even if it was completely useless to them.
Donghyuck didn't even bother going to the bathroom that night, he just flopped onto his bed and dozed off.
