Chapter 7: "Currents"

Scott and I walk into the very crowded hospital to bring our mom dinner. We spot her down the hall and she turns and spots us. "Oh, thank God. I'm starving." She says walking up to us and taking the bag out of my hand, before setting it on the counter. "Oh, I'm sorry." She turns to us. "I'm sorry. Thank you for bringing me dinner." She pulls the two of us into a hug.

"Is everything okay?" I ask her once we pull apart.

"Except for half the accident victims in a ten car pile-up being rerouted here from downtown, and the E.R attending not answering any of his pages, yeah, I'm okay."

"What does not answering pages mean?" Scott asks.

"It means that nobody can find him." I answer Scott.

"So now we have to wait for the on call to get here." Mom says.

"Miss." A woman says to our mom.

"Yes?"

"Excuse me, can I kind of please have something for the pain?" She rushes out.

"Okay, I'm sorry. I know. But, actually, giving you something could complicate things, so we really just need to wait for the doctor's. Okay?" Mom says helping the woman sit down in a chair.

"Yeah."

"Okay. How much longer on Dr. Hilyard?" Mom asks the receptionist.

"Ten minutes." She answers.

I look back to the woman in pain and I nudge Scott in the shoulder. He gives me a confused look and he follows my line of sight as he understands what I'm trying to tell him.

He sits down next to the woman as I sit on the other side of her and I look around to make sure no one is watching.

"Uh, you know," Scott starts to say as the woman looks to him. "I think that I read online that sometimes human contact can help with pain."

She slightly nods and squeezes her eyes shut in pain. Scott and I look around and I nod to him when no one is watching. He gently places his hand on hers as black vains runs through his hand and up his wrist. As her pain reduces the black vains disappear under Scott's shirt sleeve and the woman sighs in relief.

She looks at Scott a little confused, but looks at him thankfully.

Someone yelling catches my attention as I look to the hospital entrance doors.

"Someone - someone help me!" I look to see Ethan and he's holding up a very weak Danny. "I need help!"

"Okay, gentle, gentle, gentle!" Mom says as her, Scott, and I try to gently sit Danny in a chair in the waiting room and he yells in pain.

"What did you do to him?" I angrily ask Ethan as I pull him away.

"Nothing. He said he was having chest pains and trouble breathing, but it - it just kept getting worse."

"This is not good. How much longer on Dr. Hilyard?" Mom asks the receptionist as she shrugs her shoulder and mom looks back over to Danny. "His larynx has shifted to his side. I think it's a tension pneumothorax."
