Silence

Chapter 37

           It's the last day of school before Winter Break and my mind has mentally passed out after taking my last Midterm. At our school, they held this after test free period to just relax and then they let us go home an hour later.

I sat with Lucy as she told me that she would be leaving after school to go visit her family and have their big Christmas reunion.

"Josie what's going on with you that Dylan guy are you two dating or something," Lucy asks and I shake my head.

"We're just close friends and besides I thought you were into him," I said teasing her.

"I mean he's cute and all but whenever I try to talk him he just says hi and walks off. So I think he probably likes you and is focused on getting you so he's canceling out any other girl" she tells me and I feel weird. Dylan liking me is the craziest thing I mean I don't like him like that anyway.

Then my mind decides to think about all the things I like about him and now I can't stop thinking about him. I like that he's opened himself to me and how he's stopped cutting himself and how he took his jacket off for me. How he's beginning to feel better about himself and how when he fell asleep on my bed the other day how cute he looked.

As much as I cared for him my feelings and emotions for Ryan were and always would be stronger. Ryan was never rude to me and he never did something to hurt me intentionally as Dylan would whenever he yelled at me.

Isaac walks in and sits with a group of juniors who laugh at a joke he makes. They were apart of the school play which would be premiering tomorrow night. I see him talk to this senior who's playing Alice. He and Davina were lucky that barely any seniors wanted to be in the play they would've snagged all the roles.

I open my phone when no one is looking and check Snapchat and see stuff from my friends at my old school. Ana recorded an argument between two students and posted it on her private story. It was an argument about a question on the exam which was so stupid no one cared about their tests at all.

All I cared about was whether or I passed so I can finish high school sooner than later. When all the students testing all finished they release us all to go home. I waited for Stasia to be done as Lucy got picked up early. When she walked in she looked stressed and ready to take a nap.

"What's wrong, "I ask her and she squints her eyes.

"I'm tired and mentally done with school," she tells me and Isaac walks up to sit with us.

"You guys better sit in the front and are you staying after for dress rehearsal today?" he asks and we both nod and he smiles.

"Have you seen Dylan?" I ask.

"Yeah I think he's using the bathroom or something," Isaac says as the bell rings dismissing kids to go home. We wait for Dylan and then we all walk to the auditorium as Isaac asks Dylan to help him with his costume. Stasia and I sit in the middle so none of the parent volunteers could see us on our phones.

I notice she's wearing Drew's sweatshirt and I couldn't help but feel happy and proud of her. She found someone that could make her smile.

"Hey so Josie what's the deal with you and Ryan I heard you two have a thing or something," she says and I shush her.

"Who told you that?" I ask.

"Well I have eyes and ears and I'm not dumb," she tells me and I hoped it wasn't too obvious.

"It's fine I just thought after everything he put you through but you do you," she says and Dylan walks over to us wiping his cheek.

"Isaac decided to kiss me on the cheek and said I was his good luck charm," he tells us and we laugh as he shakes his head.

"I was helping him put his bunny his bunny ears on and then he starting thanking me and saying how proud he was that I made it through the year. Then he told me I was his good luck charm and kissed me on the cheek" he told us through laughs.

           We applaud the play and Isaac's mom picks us up and drops us off at his house.

"Okay, we have a date Isaac you know the rules no boys in your room unless he has protection" his mom jokes.

"We'll be back at 10 we left money for pizza," his dad says and they both kiss him on the head. When they leave Isaac grabs a box of games but decide on truth or dare.

"Josie truth or dare" Stasia asks

"Truth," I say while Stasia thinks a good question to ask me.

"Is it truth that you and Mr. Dylan shared a kissed?" she asked already clearly knowing the answer.

"Yes it's true," I say looking at him he doesn't seem bothered by the question.

"Dylan truth or dare?" Isaac asks him.

"Dare," Dylan says and I get scared when a smile appears on Isaac's face.

"I dare you and Josie to go in that closet for 7 minutes," he says completely changing the game.

           I look at Dylan who looks at me and we both shrug as Isaac makes kissy faces as we get up and go in the closet. Which happened to be tight only giving us a foot of distance between each other.

He was wearing a long black sleeve shirt and looked kind of cute in it. I looked around in the closet and it full of Halloween decorations and some presents. 

"Hey," Dylan said breaking my focus as my back hit the wall.

"Let's make the most of our time," he says as he pushes me against the wall kissing me and I kiss him back.

"Hey," I say letting my thoughts fade and setting myself back in reality.

"So how's your day been," he said and when stuff started moving he got closer to me.

"Good and thank god testing is over I'm so ready for vacation," I say and he chuckles.

"Josie can I just say at the beginning of this year I was in a really dark place" he begins to say.

"Believe me I know," I say.

"I just wanted to say thank you for everything you've changed my life and changed my perspective on life. You quite literally saved my life and I think in some way I've done the same to you which gives me the courage to tell you that I really care about you" he says and as he's about to close the space between a box falls and when it's about to hit me he covers me.

        He has his hands on my face and then the closet door opens with Stasia telling us our time is up. She takes a look at the two of us in our awkward position and nods in approval.

"Let's order a pizza I'm starving," I say and Isaac calls Dominoes.

We sit on the floor eating Pizza and talk about our plans for the break. Stasia tells us she might be leaving to see her grandparents. We watch The Polar Express while Isaac makes us hot chocolate and Stasia helps him bake cookies.

"I don't ever say this about anyone or anything but I love you guys," Isaac says after the movie ends and we all look at one another.

"I love you too," I say and then we all group hug as his parents come home. My brother picks me up and I text Ryan. I ask him if he was going to the play tomorrow but he tells me that he had plans but he'd be free the next day.

As I roll into my bed I decide to text Dylan who happened to still be up and I sent him some quotes. He asked me what shows he should start watching now that Isaac is letting him use his Netflix.

I told him that after winter break we could binge watch a show together and he agrees. I tell him goodnight and then fall asleep and have a dream of me running and being fit.

Maybe it's my future I hope that my friends are still going to be there for me.
