Chapter 9 – A Pack full of formidable warriors.

A yawn escapes breaks through the quiet as I press another key on the laptop with one hand, squinting at the bright glare of my computer screen. The other hand swiftly swings my dagger mindlessly, the sharp light from my laptop reflecting off the deadly blade, glinting with a vicious wink.

I swing the blade again, glancing around the darkened room before returning to the scratched laptop screen. My nerves rattle as my head pounds with the tension that had been building since, I set foot in this place.

Dinner was horrendous.

Nans eyes constantly flickered to me, Mum's death glare bore a hole in the other side of my face and my own remained trained on the barely touched lasagne on my plate as Casey talked animatedly about her last school. Between the overwhelmingly formal dinner that was brought to us by servers, the dinner itself having been dramatically presented on the plate as if we were Royalty and the constant feeling of hundreds of pairs of eyes on me, I'm surprised I'm still functioning. Needless to say, it didn't take me long to quickly find an excuse to retire to my new room without a word to Nan except a short, clipped goodnight, which Mum had glared me down to do.

The dagger swishes violently through the air.

I'm not going to make this easy on anyone. I'm not happy that we're here and yeah, it is my fault we had to move again but out of all the places on this God damned planet Mum had to choose here. She chose the one place I've refused to step foot in since Dad and Jason's death.

The one place that happens to have a certain golden eyed jerk living there.

Shaking my head, I refocus on the screen in front of me.

Research... the one word that can truly scar a teenager, especially if it's heard in a school environment where it means time has to be taken outside of school to work. So, why the hell am I doing this to myself? I groan out loud squinting at the screen in the dark and internally chiding myself; this is different, this isn't homework. This is making sure my family is safe and figuring out what the hell Mum has gotten us into... there's a Pack here and I need to know whether they're a thre...

A long howl slices through the night sky and my hand freezes, squeezing tightly around the handle blade.

It's him.

A shiver runs down my spine as a pair of golden eyes flash behind my eyelids as they flutter closed. Rain patters against the window seat, the wind billowing my golden curtains as I inhale deeply. For the first time since I discovered my enhanced abilities his scent cuts thorough the rain, wrapping its tantalising scent around me in an inescapable blanket.

Heat flushes through my cheeks and my heart thuds so loudly I'm sure it's in tune with the harsh beat vibrating through my abandoned earphones on the desk.

Then I felt it.

A pull. A soft but firm pull.

The breath whooshes out of me as the hairs on my arms stand on end, my gaze settling on the bay window. The inescapable pulling sensation sends a flurry of pins and needles down my legs, encouraging them to move, daring them... compelling them with a foreign, unspoken command.

My fists curl.

No. I won't. I can't.

A gasp escapes my lips as a low growl vibrates through the air, stirring up a kind of possessive power I'd never experienced before. A growl I should never have been able to hear from this distance. Heat flushes through my cheeks as my body struggles to fight the strengthening pull, the outcome inevitable.
