Usually when I told someone the story about me and James, I hated the feeling of it. It felt like I was telling myself that it was my fault, that I screwed everything up, for the thousandth time. It felt like I lost, like James had control of everything. I hated it. And usually, the one I'm telling my story, judges me. They don't say anything, but the look on their face says everything. The response was usually ❜I'm so sorry❜, or ❜Just get a divorce❜, or
You should've been more careful❜. Like everything was so easy.

Nathaniel listened carefully, showing no judgement, no feelings almost. Even if he was just doing his job and keeping everything professional, I appreciated it. For the first time, it felt like I explained everything in just some minutes, when it really was almost an hour. The whole time, I was remembering his words: You choose.
And for the first time, I felt like I had the opportunity to.

❞I'm afraid our time for today is over Mrs. Richmond.❞ He politely ended the our coversation.
❞Thank you for your time.❞

I gave him a weak smile in response. ❞When is the second meeting?❞

He gave his assistant a glance, together with a nod and she left the room, her heels hitting the floor as she passed by.

❞I will send you the time to your e-mail,❞ He said, looking like a hint of feelings came back to his face.
❞I could consider our meeting to be in two weeks, instead of waiting much longer.❞

❞That would be great!❞ Excitement took over me.

I heard him take a deeper breath, ❞I know how important this is for you, Mrs. Richmond, that is the reason.❞

It hit me, all this time he was being so professional, showing no emotion. I was happy and excited that he tried to understand, instead of giving me a time in three months and not even trying to solve this case of mine.

❞I really appreciate it, Mr. King. It means a lot.❞

He smiled, it was a weak smile that could almost go unnoticed, but I noticed it.

He leaned back in his chair, just looking at me. ❞I like to keep things professional, Mrs. Richmond. Always.❞ He spoke in a very serious tone. ❞But you make it quite hard for me to do that.❞

I stopped breathing for a second. I couldn't focus because I didn't believe my own ears. After all this time, maybe I was going insane, starting imagining things. But he was still sitting there, his eyes piercing through me, and I could swear I saw a little smirk that was gone after half a second.

❞I apologize.❞ His serious tone was back on.

❞No, no.❞ I quickly reacted. ❞You did nothing wrong.❞ I corrected kindly, causing him to smile lightly.
❞I really appreciate your work.❞

I stood up and he followed, giving me a nod before I walked out the door. I had no words. The only thing that went through my mind was:
How could I see this man again, without feeling how my body completely betrays me and goes after it's own will?
