Blake did not sleep well that night.

The urgent business Aunt Sarah had summoned him to the family room for turned out to be a lengthy and painful discussion of the Winter Solstice dinner plans.

It seemed that every tiny detail needed his input, and Sarah took an almost malicious delight in asking his opinion on even the most mundane aspects of the planning. On multiple occasions during the course of the morning she had pointed out triumphantly that he wouldn't need to bother himself with all the details, if only he had a Luna to take care of it for him.

Privately, he wondered why he needed to bother himself with them anyway. Ophelia would have been more than capable of taking on the task herself, and failing that, his aunt seemed to have everything organised already. But he was smart enough not to express that opinion out loud.

As soon as they could escape, the two brothers had vanished back to the relative safety of the study, ignoring the small twinge of guilt he felt at abandoning Hannah to both his relatives and persistent suitor. He had more important things to discuss with his brother.

Asher had stayed with him until late in the evening, analysing the recent revelations and hatching a plan to try and get the information they needed.

Omegas brought them food as they plotted together; clearing away the plates afterwards without either of them really noticing they'd been there. It was only as the sun was setting and a lone Omega appeared with the offer of drinks, that he realised how efficiently they had worked around him all day.

Hannah would have noticed, he mused to himself.

Victoria would not, Rothan pointed out smugly.

He shook himself, and resolved to reward the ongoing efforts of the household Omegas at the Winter Solstice. Once Asher had retired for the night, he attempted to go to bed himself.

But despite his physical exhaustion, his mind betrayed him. Refusing to rest in favour of roaming through his many problems, he tossed and turned for several hours.

Over the last couple of months, he'd faced growing issues in his pack. Most, he loathed to admit, could be easily solved once he chose a mate. Coupled with that came the Rogues outside his borders and – if everything he'd learnt recently was anywhere near accurate – external tensions much wider than he'd first believed.

There was also the girl, sleeping just a few doors away every night. A much more complicated issue. One he could never truly put to bed until he knew who she really was... and how much danger she posed to his pack.

Possible scenarios had repeated themselves over and over in his mind and he had eventually abandoned his attempts to sleep. He crossed the hall to hover outside her room, as he had done every night since she first arrived at his house It hadn't been a coincidence that he'd been walking past when she woke up screaming last night.
