Xavier's POV

I sat on the grass, overlooking the lake before me as Emerald continued to play with my fingers. Emerald looked behind me and I followed her eyes to see Amelia approaching us, I smiled as she sat down beside me resting her head against my shoulder.

"Are you okay?" I asked and she nodded her eyes on emerald who was now playing with both our hands, giving each finger a dialogue of their own.

"It's time for dinner, Emerald let's wash your hands," I heard Mrs Davidson say for behind us and Emerald giggled pulling herself into my lap.

"Xavier is going to do it," she said her hands on my shoulder steadying herself.

"I don't mind," I told her mother chuckling and Amelia smiled kissing my cheek.

"I'm going to help set the table," she informed me standing, walking away with her mother.

"You're going to have to show me to the bathroom," I told Emerald getting up and she giggled directing me upstairs into her room, that was Cinderella themed.

"Your room is really pretty," I complemented and she smiled as we walked into the bathroom.

"I decorated it all by myself,"

"Really?"

"Yes, Amelia helped a tiny bit, but the idea was all mine," she concluded as I was her hands with soap.

"So you love princesses?"

"Yeah my favorite is Cinderella, she wears a shiny dress," she said distracted by the soap, I chuckled washing her hands clean before drying it with a paper towel. I sat her on the counter doing the same to my hands before we began our journey downstairs.

"My mommy likes you, she said you're very nice and tall," Emerald informed as we walked downstairs making me laugh.

"I like you too but I don't like him," Emerald said pointing to a man Amelia was talking to.

"Why not?"

"Because he made Amelia cry," she whispered in my ear.

"Do you like chocolate?" She asked laying her head on my shoulder.

"I don't really eat sweets," I replied eyeing the man as I walked off in search of Amelia's mother.

"Why not?"

"Never really liked them,"

"This is why Amelia says your weird," she mumbled making me laugh.

"Can you keep a secret?" She asked me her eyes meeting mine, making me wonder if she was actually six, she was very articulate and mature for her age. If it wasn't for her small figure I would have guessed her age to be eight or nine.

"Of course,"

"Pinky promise," she said and I did just that, she sighed leaning forward to whisper in my ear.

"My dad has cancer,"

Amelia's POV

"How have you been?" He asked and I rolled my eyes already tired of the conversation.

"She's been doing great," I heard Xavier reply his hand possessively wrapping around my waist.

"Xavier Persons," he added outstretching his hand to the man before him.

"Norvin Mitchell," he replied shaking Xavier's hand.

"We'll see you around Norvin," Xavier said dismissing him as he released his hand leading me away from the dreadful conversation I was engaged in.

"Who is that?" He asked

"Somebody I used to date," I replied and he chuckled.

"Norvin?" He asked amused and I rolled my eyes at him playfully as we walked to the dinning area. We sat around the table after a couple minutes we were all engaged in conversation and a wonderful meal.

Family members throwing questions at Xavier every chance they got while Emerald sat beside me allowing her utensils to dance along the table, with the help of her small hands.

I looked over to my dad who was whispering something to my mother she nodded sending him a sad smile before standing moving over to Emerald.

"I'll bring her up, you can take my seat," Xavier told my mother she send him a questioning look, he simply smiled kissing my forehead doing as he stated and my mother moved to sit beside me.

"Probably tired of the questions," my mother said making me laugh. But his behavior puzzled me, it didn't sit well, he has been distracted, stuck in his own mind since we sat for dinner. I couldn't help but wonder if the questions made him uncomfortable.

My father stood tapping his glass in indication of a speech and I smiled looking at him.

"I have an announcement, my birthday isn't the only reason I requested you all to be here. For the last month I've been going back and forth searching for the perfect time to tell you all....umm..what has been," he paused looking over to my mother and I frowned confused at his sad tone.

"I've been diagnosed with stage three lung cancer,"
