For some reason there is a long period of time, a few months or year, where Steve is targeted or kidnapped by criminals so Five-Oh makes a "Steve-Protection-Squad" and they try to have a member with him as often as they can and Danny ends up spending the most time with him.
Steve is taken again on his way to work when he stopped for coffee. A large group of men jumped him on his way back to his car.
When Five-Oh finds him he is unconscious and looks like he had taken a beating. He woke up soon after he was taken to the hospital. Danny went with and the others wrapped up and stopped by the hospital on their way home.
Steve was near the end of the eight hour observation and was leaning on Danny who was sitting next to him on the bed. The two were bantering and Danny was subtly checking his injuries since Steve wouldn't let the doctor check after the initial care for them. The group just smiled and left, shooting Danny requests for updates as they did.
