"Hey! We're about to call it!" Cam claimed, watching as Max got up from his chair

"Skip me" he retorted, leaning over to toss his cards onto the table, crushing his smoke in the ashtray. He walked only a few feet away from the table, towards the wall of the room, pressing his phone to his ear.

"What is it?" he spoke quickly, blowing the last bit of smoke from his lungs in a puff above his head.

"Sir, The Miss appears to be in duress"

"You can drop the fancy talk, you know that, right?" Max retorted

"I refuse" the old man responded simply, and Max forced a roll of his eyes

"It's the middle of the night, Lancelot. Can't this wait till morning?" Max said with an edge

"Well, The Miss appears-" Max was quick to cut him short

"I really don't care what The Miss wants. I'm not her dog, I'm not going to come running every time she beckons it of me"

"The Miss is concerned about her pet" Was Lancy's simple response. Max raised an eyebrow, letting out a sigh

"What about the mutt? what more does she want? we feed it! we water it!-"

"The Miss is concerned that the dog may be ill" He lifted his hand, closing his eyes and rubbing his temples of their fatigue, unsuccessfully of course. He should have fucking left it alone, he wasn't on a leash, attached to a ball and chain. But, he knew if he did nothing, it would just make her more angry at him, maybe to the point that he could never redeem himself in her eyes. He ended the call, glancing back at the table where the others sat, dealing cards for another hand. He walked up, leaning over the back of his now empty chair, grabbing the half-full bottle of beer so he could toss the rest of it back.

"Gotta go"

"Really?" Bunny asked, looking up at him with her wide, dark eyes. She grabbed his arm, giving it a small tug "Can't it wait till morning? Who would want you at this time of night? It's 2 AM" She looked concerned about him, it was the more endearing things that made him fall for her to begin with. There weren't that many people with a heart kind enough to worry about him.

"It's fine" he responded, placing his hand over her own against his arm, giving it a reassuring squeeze "It's just Lancy, you know how the old brute can be"

"Well...alright" Bunny didn't seem convinced, at least not to him, but the excuse would do for now. She was going to find out what was going on eventually, he knew it, and somehow she wanted to avoid that for just a little longer.

"Tell the geezer I said Hi" Cam gave a good, hearty wave

"Unlikely...he still very much blames you for the pig incident, telling him you said 'hi' isn't going to stop him from hating the fuck out of you" Maxwell retorted

"Hey!" Cam jumped from his chair "You bought that pig! it was your idea! I was merely an innocent bystander!"

"You were still in his bedroom! on his bed! when he got home and found the pig in his house! you dressed it in one of his wife's nightgowns!" Bunny exclaimed

"The pig WAS COLD! they don't have that much hair you know!" Cam retorted, obviously trying to defend his actions with flimsiness. Max merely huffed, turning away from the group and giving them a quick salute before he shut the door behind him. As much as he insisted he wasn't Harmony's lapdog, yet he was doing exactly what a lapdog would do. His own weakness for her irritated him. He got into the lift, slamming his finger on the button for the 12th floor and watched the doors slide closed. Whatever got her panties in a twist, it better be worth it.
