When he came back a couple of hours later, the sun was just coming over the horizon. He walked off the elevator, exhaustion settling bone-deep. She caught his eye, and loured him closer like a beautifully singing monster about to bite off his head. She was on the couch in the living room, curled into a tight ball, and asleep. She looked just as tired as he did, she certainly hadn't been sleeping very long. She looked so delicate in sleep. What she had done, almost entirely naked, falling at his feet like a waiting, living sex toy, had been the best and the worst thing he had ever seen. She certainly knew how to push every button, pull every lever.

She must have felt his presence, because her eyes gently fluttered open, turning slightly to look up at him in the low light. She jumped up suddenly, eagerness fluttering about her eyes

"Is she going to be ok? what did the vet say?" her sudden bombardment was aggravating his already growing headache.

"The vet said she had some internal bleeding into her abdomen" he responded, and she looked like she had been punched in the gut, and even though her tears had probably just stopped not long ago, they started right up again "With her history, they said it was most likely caused by a complication with one of her previous internal injuries from her youth, either that, or just a fail caused by old age. They managed to stabilize her...she's alright" The twist in her chest burst, unwinding at the sound of that news. She let out a heavy breath of relief, lopping her head with a happy smile on her face.

"They want to keep her a couple of days, just to monitor her. They think they stopped the bleeding, and she seems to be improving, but they want to make sure that they fixed her up right" He watched as she put her head in her hands, taking deep breaths, doing the best she could to calm herself down.

"Thank you Maxwell" She lifted her head, wiping heavy tears with a smile on her cheeks. She took an extra deep breath, swiping away the last of the water sliding across her skin before she met him right in the eyes. "A deal is a deal" She went right for the edge of her nightgown, about to pull it over her head when he reached out, snapping a grip around her wrist, stopping her from lifting it past revealing a slight sliver of her pale belly.

She lifted her head, looking at him with wide eyes, confusion evident in their shine. "Not now?" she asked

"Not ever"he retorted, his voice hard. She couldn't believe him, feeling his hold on her wrist loosen. He pulled his hand away from her skin, looking away from her, as if in shame. "You will never, ever offer your body for a favor again-" he let out a heavy growl from the back of his throat, getting the courage to look at her "You are not something to be exchanged...ever!"

You're much too good for that.

Her eyes were wide, still shiny like glass with tears, but they weren't tears of sadness, she smiled kindly at him, and he would always remember that smile, the first time she had smiled only for him.
