the night before:

Josh knew he couldn't go to Edward, and he also knew there was no talking Lydia out of her ways so he only had one choice. Jacob. Josh slipped out of the Clearwater house where he had been spending most of the time, he went to the Black home.

"Yellow," Josh said waving a hand as Rachel Black opened the door. She sized him up with that sassy attitude she always wore.

"You're Lydia's old boy toy, right?" She asked tilting her head, it made Josh gulp.

"Is Jacob home?" He asked and she just nodded.

"Can I-can-" He went to stutter out.

"Rachel stop messing with him," Jacob said coming into view as he put a t-shirt on. His sister just rolled her eyes and walked away.

"What's up, man?" Jacob asked inviting the nervous boy inside.

"I didn't know who else to go to. I just-I'm assuming you know about Edward being home?" Josh asked and he nodded.

"I would go to Edward with this kinda thing but he's preoccupied. I'm just-Lydia has this plan." Josh stuttered out.

"What do you mean, plan?"

"You remember when she had to go to Italy to save Edward when he thought Bella died? Well if history repeats itself and Bella's not around to save him then she wants to go with him. She wants to trade herself for Luke." Josh explained and his eyes widened.

"Why would she do that? We're doing so great, why would she throw it all away?" Jake asked and Josh took a breath before explaining.

"It's her brother. She feels guilty, we all do. That's why her moms always taking off and why I never stuck around this long. Whenever we feel an ounce of happiness we remember that because of his sacrifice, he'll never feel that again."

"Then there has to be another way. We can take the Volturi." He said and Josh shook his head.

"How? The Cullen's won't be any help until after the fact." Josh said and he frowned taking a long pause.

"Then what can we do?" He asked.

"Trust that Edward will refuse her." He said and Jacob scoffed.

"That's not enough for me," Jake said and Josh agreed.

"Me either that's why I'm here. Jacob, if Edward is weak and doesn't refuse her you're the only other person who can. You have that wolfie claim on her." Josh said and he shook his head.

"She'll hate me for it," Jacob said with a long sigh.

"You and I both know you'd rather her hate you and be safe than love you and be in danger," Josh said and Jacob nodded pushing past him. That's when the wolves howled. Sam knew.

"I have to go now," Jacob said pushing past him.

"What's going on?" Josh asked confused following after him.

"They know about Bella. I have to keep them from going after them. I have to protect Lydia."

Jacob stormed out of the house and shifted. It was his time to protect her even though she wanted to risk herself for someone else.
