I woke up excited. My body seemed to be humming with electricity. I jumped out of bed and got ready for the day. I put on my usual jeans and plain t-shirt and all but ran out of my room. I couldn't smell him around the pack house but I could hear the other pack members chattering about the big day. I made my way to the kitchen and got myself a glass of water. I leant against the bench and took a sip. The entire house fell silent as a change in the air washed through. He was made Alpha. I hid my wide smile behind my glass. A lot of packs hold a huge ceremony when a new Alpha is crowned but our pack just has a small, private thing between the previous Alpha and Luna and the new ones.

"I wonder if his mate is going to be here." I heard a small group of girls giggling together.

"We've still got a few hours until we find out. He's got to shift." One of the other girls said. When a new Alpha is crowned, they have to shift. It's almost identical to the very first shift. After being crowned their wolf changes so they have to go through that all over again. I feel sorry for him. He must be in so much pain. I remember when he shifted for the first time. It took him nearly 6 hours which is unusual but not unheard of. I think this shift will take much longer so I went back to my bedroom to wait with bated breath.

The time passed incredibly slowly. I was almost to the point of panic with worry. Was he ok? It was dark out now. The sun had long since set. I got off my bed and started pacing the room anxiously.

"He's fine. You would have felt it." I said softly to myself. Yeah, I would have felt if something bad happened. He's ok. I stopped pacing when I heard the front door open. Was that him? I left my room and went down stairs. There was a crowd. Through all the people I saw a familiar mop of dark blonde hair that I just wanted to run my fingers through. As though he sensed me looking at him, his eyes scanned the crowd until they landed on me at the bottom of the stairs. I instantly felt the connection strengthen. I couldn't stop the wide smile on my face. As quickly as he looked at me, he looked away and started talking to someone near him. My smile dropped slightly as a pang of hurt shot through my heart. I took a deep breath. It was probably nothing. He has other pack members to talk to. He'll come and get me when he's finished. I went back upstairs to my room and sat on my bed with a content sigh. Now we can be together.

It was a few hours later when I heard a knock on my door. My heart leapt into my throat. I opened it to reveal my beautiful mate.

"Can I come in?" He asked softly. His voice sending pleasurable shivers down my spine. I nodded and stepped aside. He walked in and I closed the door behind him. He sighed and ran his hand through his hair, his arm flexing deliciously. He looked at me and sighed again.

"You're my mate." He told me, like I didn't already know.

"I know. I've known for 4 months." I replied. His eyebrows shot up.

"How did you know? You're human." He asked. I laughed softly.

"Just because I haven't shifted doesn't mean that I'm human." I said. We fell into silence. My eyes flicked down to his hand that was hanging by his side. It was so close. I decided to be brave. I reached out for it. As soon as I was close I felt the sparks my parents aways talked about. He immediately pulled his hand away. It felt like a stab to my heart but I smiled anyway.

"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to scare you." I said softly. His eyes locked with mine, an unreadable emotion floating through them.

"No, I'm sorry." His voice was quiet. My head tilted to the side in confusion.

"Sorry? What for?" I asked.

"I, Alpha Damien Luke Worth, Alpha of the Firemoon Pack, reject you, Jaqueline Elizabeth Leath, as my mate."
