The oddball daughter of Karen and Ted Wheeler was, in fact, not normal for a girl her age.

Twelve was the age girls in her grade seemed to mistake trust and freedom for boys and parties.

Although her parents had knowingly consented to her having more freedoms, Clara took none of those opportunities and instead huddled in her room most days.

As of now, that's exactly where she was. Huddled. In her room.

The leather bound journal sat in her lap was blank. Her therapist had once told her writing each of her problems and then burning them would relieve her of the timid insecurities she beheld.

To put it simply, twelve and thirteen years old girls were bitches.

Clara, your nose is too wide here.

Oh! Mikes sister, you could fill out a bit here.

The glory of middle school girls. Ha.

Clara quirked a brow, uncapping her ball point pen and scribbling words and phrases messily about the yellowed paper.

It didn't take her long to fill the page with things people have both said and done.

Just as she was about to tear the page from it's binding, her door burst open and hit the wall behind it with a crash.

"Clara!"

"Jesus, Mike!" Clara barked out, closing the journal in a hurry and tossing it off her lap and onto the end of her double sized bed.

Mike rolled his eyes dramatically, hand resting on the door knob. "Mom says dinner is ready."

Just as she opened her mouth to respond, Mike slammed the door shut once more, causing a canvas that she'd hung beside her door to go tumbling to the ground.

"MICHAEL!"

The days that followed were as eventless as ever. Clara would go to school, come home, do homework and go to sleep.

This particular day, however, would be the beginning of years worth of mystery.

Currently, Clara sat on the couch beside her dad, who cursed animatedly as he fixed the antennas on the TV.

"Clara, honey, did you finish your english project?"
