a patchwork quilt of maybes and almosts ✓

understand

tick

the seconds

go by

slowly

as the hands on

the clock

turn

at a sluggish pace

she's waiting

sitting in front of you

eyebrows raised

looking expectant

as if you have an

answer

that you could

give her

she sighs at long

last

"i'm trying to help you"

but all you hear is the

dull

droning

monotone

of another

do-gooder

convinced that they are

making a

difference

leave me alone

with my thoughts

and my scattered

images

of something that

could

have been

let my hopes

fly away

like bats

out of a cave

because they are as

dark

and as

beautiful

in a gnarled

ancient

way

i

don't

want

your

help

or your

charity

or your

cause

my pain

is mine alone

and you

will never

understand
