the gentle
shush
of the waters
like they're
lulling you
into a false
sense of
complacency
"be
vigilant
be
strong
don't let your
walls down
you'll be
safe"
but then you
fall in love
and they ask
"why are you
shuttered
why are you
afraid?"
because i've
been told
my whole life
to not let
anyone
in
and that's
not changing
for you
and then you
fall out of love
and people are
talking
and you
wonder what the
hell
is wrong with
you
when other
girls
are getting
guys and girls
by the dozen
and you can't
pull a
single one
maybe it's the
lock
on your lips
when it comes to
talking about
you
maybe it's the
twist
of your gut
when you have to
speak
maybe it's the
culture
the upbringing
the man
the glass
ceiling
pushing you
down
when you have
so much
potential
potential to
love
potential to
be loved
but maybe it's
just that
there isn't anyone
good enough
to appreciate
you
and someday
you'll fall in love
and it will be
good
