pieces of....PIE? i can hear my math teacher now... sitting

in a cold chair

they're in front of you

you heard them

talking

before you walked in

about you

you know

nails digging into

your skin

try not to cry

the internal

mantra

of "breathe"

you shouldn't have to

breathe

but there you are

they offer

weak smiles

and helpful

suggestions

that you don't want to

take

because it's like

admitting defeat

like giving away the one

single

piece

of yourself

that you actually

love

but you nod

because you can't

do

anything else

and in the end

they will always win

better to give up

before you

lose

control

another breath

the words

drift

through the air

in one ear

and out the other

they can't hear your

screams

or your

sobs

because you cry

at night

under the covers

in case they're

up late

and hear you

you don't have the

heart

to tell them

it's all their fault

but it is

when they let you go

there are marks

all over your

skin

that they don't

notice

because if they

did

they would

wonder

and you don't want them to

wonder

so you smile

crack your jokes

act like you are the

same girl

that they loved

until they didn't

but when you

turn out

the lights

a single

tear

traces its way

down your cheek

like a dried up

creek

shallow and soft and quiet

because you're

all out of tears

so you let your

breathing

even

and you fall asleep

as if you're

happy

as if

you're okay

because if you

stop pretending

you'll go to

pieces
