I don't own any of the characters apart from Melanie Malfoy. All of the characters belong to J.K. Rowling.

"I hear we have a problem here Melanie, am I correct?" the Dark Lord sneered at me. I was close to tears but I was determined not to let him see that.

"No, I don't think we do," I said in a confident sounding voice. I inwardly sighed, glad that my nervousness wasn't detectable. He was circling me, waiting for me to cave, but mother had asked me not to do that. I was going to stay strong for her and Draco.

"Well, we'll have to change that, won't we," he hissed and I knew exactly what was coming. "Crucio!"

A searing pain went through my body. I could hear a cold blooded scream in the distance, mixed with some manic laughter. It didn't take me long to realise that I was the one screaming, and my body was burning more by the second.

The pain came to a sudden stop, but I still couldn't move whether through pain or the shock, I was unsure. I was still on the floor from when I had fallen and I could feel the wetness of tears on my cheeks. I went to wipe them away with my arm, but it throbbed horribly, so I decided against it.

"I'm glad we've come to an agreement," he said, adding a painful kick into my ribs before gliding out the room.

I lay there, unsure of how to feel. I knew it could be a long time until the pain wore off because of how long he'd held the curse for. What he didn't realise, was that we could have more of a problem now that he'd done this. I wasn't one to let a grudge go easily.

Eventually I built up enough strength to pull myself up and crawl across our huge basement. I don't even know why he chose to do it down here anyway; father would have taken a lot of pleasure in seeing me like that. I tried to keep myself from thinking about all the things that he could do to me next. Most Death Eaters would say I deserve it anyway, and I knew he would feel the same. Something bad was going to happen, and soon, but hopefully not before I had Draco back by my side.

"Please can I come? You never let me, just this once? I begged mother for what felt like the millioth time that day.

"No Melanie. You know what your father says, it's for your own protection!" mother replied again. I resisted the urge to roll my eyes at her.

"We'll just say that I'm a cousin of Draco's, no one will know. I won't even get noticed. Plus, I highly doubt someone's going to come and attack me at King's Cross Station when there are Muggles in close range." My argument sounded pathetic to be honest. Draco and I were practically identical, but I'd never been to greet him at the station. Actually, I'd never even been to the station considering how long Draco had been attending Hogwarts.

"No Melanie! You aren't going, you will just have to wait until we get back!" she shouted. I flinched and stepped backwards. Mother never shouted at me if she could help it, she didn't want to treat me the way father did. "I'm sorry, I know you want to come, but you know your father won't let you. We'll be back soon enough. Goodbye Mel," she said softly coming in to give me a hug. I hugged her tighter as she kissed the top of my head.

"Goodbye," I whispered as she walked out the door. For the fifth year running, I was left in the house on my own with no one to talk to. Yes, we had house elves here as well, but father forbade them to talk to me unless someone else was in the house too. He doesn't trust me with anything. 'I would love to prove him wrong' I thought as I walked through our mansion to the library.

"Sorry Miss, but we're cleaning in here, so you're not allowed in." one of the house elves squeaked.

"Oh, that's okay. I'll just...go somewhere else," I said as I turned away.

I walked into the kitchen to quickly grab something to eat, because I knew it could be a while until my family returned, when I was met by a group of Death Eaters. 'I should really start watching where I'm going...' I thought. I couldn't think of how to slip out again now because one of them had stood in front of the door. Ah, dear uncle Rodolphus, perfect.

"Well, if it isn't little Melanie Malfoy. What would you need from down here?" he said as he walked slowly towards me. When he reached me, he went to run his finger along my jaw line. I whipped my head away, and was met with a loud chorus of laughter. "Shouldn't you be heading down to the station to pick up your brother? Oh wait..."

Another chorus of laughter rang out. My head dropped and I could see his feet moving closer towards me. "You're not wanted there are you?" he sneered in my ear. I could feel the anger boiling in the pit of my stomach, but I managed to push it down and not respond.

"No uncle, I'm just staying here for my own protection," I echoed mother's earlier words, smiled, grabbed an apple and pushed my way to the door.

My whole family were Death Eaters, which was exactly why I couldn't stand to be around any of them for more than three minutes at a time. Apart from Draco and mother that is. She was forced into this through marriage, and me and Draco were born into it.

While I had been thinking about my unfortunate family tree, I had unconsciously walked to mine and Draco's old hide out from when we were little. When the Dark Lord used to come and we were too young to be around him, mother used to bring us down here so that we could be safe. The little hut was starting to ruin before your eyes now, it had been around that long.

I smiled as I slipped inside the tiny door and looked around. It was exactly how I remembered it, with the small picnic table and small armchairs in the corner and loads of drawings Draco and I had done as we'd grown up. All the room was decorated in the colours of Slytherin, the beloved house of my father's at Hogwarts (eugh!). I hated it, that's why we'd covered it in the first place. Well, it had been my reason. The pictures hadn't been put up until we found out I wasn't allowed to attend Hogwarts and Draco helped me, as a way to try and make up for it.

"Melanie? Melanie! Your brother's home!" I took one last glance around the small building, and with little difficulty (surprisingly) I managed to run out of the tiny door without getting stuck, and run back into our huge manor.

As I reached the living room, I saw my twin beaming at me as he stood next to our mother. Father gave me a quick glance before sweeping out the room. I couldn't help but feel hurt at his gesture and Draco saw that straight away. I quickly pinned a smile onto my face and ran into the outstretched arms of Draco Malfoy for the first time since he had left in September.

"Hey," I whispered as he hugged me tighter.

"Hey," he whispered back. I could tell he was smirking even in the hug and I couldn't help but let a genuine smile spread onto my face. "I missed you, Smelanie," he said as mother walked out the room to let us catch up properly.

"Don't call me that!" I whined at him, but the effect was lost as I was smiling.

"Well, it wouldn't be our proper greeting otherwise, would it?" he smirked at me again, and I suddenly realised just how much I'd missed my twin. I hadn't seen him at Christmas this year; he decided to stay at school for God knows what reason, leaving me on my own for even longer.

"I didn't come home, because you'd been saying how much all of the Death Eaters were hanging around here again, and I'd been asked to help do a job to get Potter into trouble," he added proudly at the end. I realised that I had said my thoughts aloud, but at least I got my answer.

"What is it with you and Potter anyway?" I asked as we walked up the stairs towards his room. I had never understood how the two became mortal enemies no matter how many times Draco explained it to me.

"I've told you Mel, we just don't get along. At all. Actually, we hate each other." He finished bluntly, but he didn't elaborate on the subject anymore, so I dropped it.

He closed his door and nodded at me to do the spell. "Muffliato," I whispered, waving my wand in the direction of the door. Because I'm homeschooled I'm allowed to do magic when Draco isn't.

"Thank you," he muttered, although it sounded slightly bitter. I couldn't help but laugh at this, he had always been jealous that I could use my wand outside of 'school hours' as he once put it.

"Anyway, I have so much to tell you..." we both said at the same time settling ourselves down on his bed.

**

"Now, I've called this meeting to let tell you about a new mission I'll be planning out." the Dark Lord said in the hushed silence of our dining room. I was sat next to Draco, and if I said I wasn't terrified, I would be lying.

We've never been to one of the meetings before; actually we were never allowed to come to the meetings before. I can only guess it can mean one thing.

"I have chosen two people to carry out this task, and I hope they will do it proudly and dilligently for me. So, Draco and Melanie Malfoy, will you please step forward?"
