Eve ran to the stairs, dropping the knife. She slid to a stop on her knees next to Cora.
"Cora, shit, I'm so sorry. I fell right into his trap." No response came from the detective. Eve picked her up, running. She broke the window with her elbow, sliding down the gutter pipe with Cora in her arms. Sloan was right. It had started to rain. Eve ran a bit before dropping to her knees, cradling her detective.
"Cora, come on, talk to me." Tears mixed with rainwater falling down Eve's face. Eve buried her face in Cora's shoulder.
"I'm so sorry. Please, just be okay. I need you to be okay, Cora."
