"Ryu-chan!" A cute voice whispered from behind
Tanaka turned around and saw his childhood friend standing by the bushes separating the two hotel properties. While Karasuno would be staying at the humble Jaybird Inn, Niiyama Joshi would be staying at the luxurious hotel next door. She smiled innocently as she waved to the rowdy second year. Tanaka blushed uncontrollably at the sight of her, he was never good with how he acted toward the opposite sex. Shimizu was a clear example of that. It didn't matter who the girl was, if they had feminine features that were automatically appealing to his male gaze he'd shut down his common sense and barely function as a human being.
"I heard that Karasuno won. Congrats!" Kanoka said sweetly as she softly clapped for Tanaka
"Th-Thanks." Tanaka said nervously his mind only focusing on the fact that a girl was talking to him
"Um... So... Let's both do our best tomorrow!" She cheered although she fumbled with her words, it appeared she was just nervous as Tanaka
"Y-Yeah..." he said a stuttering mess
"Okay see you later!" She said waving away, she basically skipped giddily to the entrance of her hotel. As she walked along the path her teammate joined her merry walk.
"Ah...So that's Ryu-chan?" Yonezawa inquired as they walked "I know this is gonna sound rude, but what's so great about him?" The second year Libero asked
If Kanoka's admiration of Tanaka lead her to take after him in Niiyama Joshi, then Yonezawa would be the equivalent of Nishinoya for Niiyama as she would basically act as Kanoka's wingwoman however the key difference being both female counterparts of Karasuno being completely reserved and tolerable.
Kanoka sighed in flustered happiness "Ryu-chan and I were neighbors up until I moved away in fourth grade..." she looked back and thought of their shared childhood, Tanaka's stoic and rebellious personality had been a trait since the early years of his life, his arrogant yet kindhearted attribute had acted as her knight in shining armor as he protected her from bullies who picked on her large height, soon after he would introduce her to the sport they both came to love. That memory stayed close to her heart every day as the mere thought of it played like a movie, a movie she loved watching and would blush at the very recall
"I don't know how to explain it... but he really helped me build confidence in myself." She said with her rose cheeks highlighting her face
"Uh-huh, really? Right..." Yonezawa teased causing Kanoka face to become as red as the uniforms they wore, her rising feelings of love almost emitting a steam from her head.
"Huh?! I didn't even say that much! How shy are you?!" Yonezawa said in shock as she now had to push the second year ace into the lobby doors.
Meanwhile Tanaka stood there frozen still wondering if that was the same Kanoka Amanai that he was friends with all those years ago.
"You've definitely got a chance." Ennoshita said behind him
"Damn you! I was trying not to notice!" Kinoshita grumbled behind the two with a mixture of frustration, jealousy, and shock
"I mean... it's not even just a chance... I thought this at the opening ceremonies, but I'm pretty sure she likes you." Ennoshita continued laying out the obvious facts
"Stop!" Narita and Kinoshita begged
Tanaka stood there frozen in place at the statements made "I... have a chance?" He said as still as a statue
Kinoshita and Narita checked on Tanaka in concern "I... have a chance?" He repeated in question. He thought back to all his attempts to court Shimizu, all failed attempts that made him reflect on his actions.
"I didn't stand a chance up until now... But now I have a chance. Which means I... I've just been born." He said drastically
