Patton rushed up the stairwell, nearly tripping in his haste to make it to the top and meet his best friend in their secret place.

Virgil Black and Patton Hart have been best friends since kindergarten, when Patton freaked out and started crying when he saw Virgil's drawing of a spider. Virgil had comforted him, and from then on the two were best friends.

When Virgil texted Patton to meet him in their secret place in the middle of his last class of the day, he knew it was important. After coming up with some excuse about having to leave class early for a family thing, Patton raced as fast as he could to the school roof, where he knew Virgil would be waiting for him.

Which is where we find them now, Virgil laying on the flat concrete roof, staring up at the sky, watching as the cool October breeze shifted the clouds lit up gold and pink against the fading blue sky.

"Virge?" Patton called out, alerting Virgil to his presence. "Are you okay?? I came as soon as I could, what's up?"

Virgil glanced at Patton and sat up, leaning against the short wall lining the edge of the roof behind him. He jerked his head and patted the ground next to him, saying nothing.

Patton shrugged his backpack off his shoulder and set it on the ground as he walked over to Virgil, sitting next to him and grabbing one of his hands, as he did whenever he was within an arms reach of Virgil.

Virgil, watching Patton take his hand, scooted closer to him, and laid his head on his shoulder, looping an arm around his waist. Patton lifted his free hand and began to gently sweep Virgil's hair off his face, looking at him concernedly.

"Virgil? Honey will you talk to me? I want to take care of you, if you'll let me."

Virgil shrugged. "Bad day. Anxiety fucking sucks. Needed you." Short, quick answers. Virgil didn't want to talk today.

"Oh honey..." Patton hugged Virgil. "Do you want to come over and spend the night with me? It's Friday, we don't have school tomorrow, my dads won't mind at all."

Virgil nodded. "Yeah. Give me a sec hold on." He pulled out his phone to text his mom, letting her know he wouldn't be home tonight.

A few moments later his phone chimed and he put it away in his pocket. "She said it's cool. Heh, I don't even know why she pretends to care at this point. Me and her both know all she cares about is Remy, it's fucking stupid."

Remy was Virgil's older brother, and their mother's favorite. Remy himself was chill enough, but with their mom's favoritism constantly showing between them, Virgil couldn't bring himself to be close with him.

"I'm sorry honey." Patton kissed his temple. "Do you want to stay here for a while or go home?"

"Stay." Virgil's answer was immediate, and Patton wasn't surprised in the slightest. The school roof was one of his favorite places, it was an escape from the hell that was the school and the students, and it put a pause on his day to day life to come up here and just...be.

"Okay." Patton hugged him again, and Virgil shifted closer, leaning into Patton's warmth. He sighed and closed his eyes.

He was grateful for Patton, he trusted him.
