"Um, It's been a rough couple of months; years actually," Y/N's hologram spoke and twisted her fingers together, "Five years to be precise. And I'm, well, what's the point of lying to you? I'm a mess. I felt like I could've done more," she shook her head and pushed herself off of the wall she was leaning on.

After Steve gave him the shield and explained to him that he had gone back in time to live his life, Tony had called Sam alone and handed him a drive. When he had asked what it was, the billionaire simply told that he had to see it for himself and that Y/N had left it personally for him. Tony led him to Y/N's room and shut the door behind, giving him his space.

And so now, Sam was seated on the bed as the hologram played out from the black and gold helmet of the Iron-Arachnid suit. He had his palm pressed together, resting against his lips, and elbows resting on his knees.

"I still don't know why you loved me—"

"Love," Sam corrected involuntarily and straightened up.

"— I mean, I don't even know what you saw in me that was worth it. I've literally been questioning it every single day. But I'm grateful that I got to spend time with the most idiotic person on earth, who also happens to be the person I love." Y/N grimaced, "Eww, see what you did to me? You made me soft. I was never all mushy gushy, romantic and disgusting," she shuddered in mock-disgust.

Sam smiled a bit, wiping the tears that dripped down his cheek with the sleeve of her coat.

"If I don't make it past the Time Heist," she heaved a deep breath, "I'm sorry. I want you to move on. I'm not worth grieving over," she gave a meaningful look, "You might even get the future I never would have been able to give you," she shrugged casually, and blinked rapidly to clear the tears gathered in her eyes.

Sam scrunched up his face in a sob and dipped his head down. His eyes were shut tightly, but tears somehow managed to fall down his cheeks.  He didn't want that. He didn't want any of that if it wasn't with her. He didn't care about that. He wanted her by his side. The sarcastic, determined, woman who had been through hell and back. The woman he fell in love with. His Y/N.

He opened his eyes and zoned out, his mind played back each and every memory he shared with Y/N. They barely had time to spend with each other. Things always seemed to get in the way, and they did. He only came back to watch her die. And he hated it. But there wasn't anything he could do.

"Sam, look at me," the hologram said and he did as told, "I love you," she smiled with a wink.

"I love you more," Sam told back as the hologram vanished into thin air. A single tear rolled down his cheek and gripped the velvet box on the bed beside him, breaking down and sobbing uncontrollably.
