Chapter 19
[Marie's POV]
With every ounce of energy I have left in me, I shove the barns tall wooden doors and turn the latch to lock it. Out of breath, I lean my forehead against the wood to rest for a moment. The crackling sound of the thunder and lightning causes the horses to neigh loudly in their stalls which makes me jump in surprise.
"Shit." I whisper out of breath. It takes me a moment to catch my breath but when I do I feel along the walls for the light switch. When I find it, I silently scan my shelter.
It's nothing too extraordinary. Just horse stalls, a lot of hay, and a few tools for upkeep. The horrible smell of horse poo envelopes me but I don't really mind since I'm kind of used to it. I mean, it's not like I regularly smell like this but back home my Gran and my Papa have a ranch with chickens and cows and all that. On some weekends I'd go and help out so I've pretty much gotten used to the smell.
As I walk further to the back, I find a cabinet in the back where there's three blankets, two large shirts, three pairs of rain boots, and gloves. I nearly laugh at the convenience of it all, but my teeth start to chatter so I quickly change out of my wet t-shirt and jeans and slip the large t-shirt and rain boots on. For extra warmth I wrap one of the blankets over my shoulders.
"Cool." I smile, looking down at my attire.
'I wonder if Ethan's alright.' My smile immediately fades at the thought. I shouldn't care considering he probably got to his car before the storm even started and since we basically just broke up, but I can't help it.
What if he didn't make it to his car in time?
Snapping me out of my thoughts is a loud banging at the door. Instead of moving to get it, I just stand here silently staring at it like it was coming to eat me.
My body instantly started to shiver in fear.
What if it's an axe-murderer coming to chop me up in tiny little pieces? Or...or what if I'm sleep and Freddie Crougar is playing some sick game with my mind?-
"For God's sakes Marie I know you're in there! Open the damn door!" I hear Ethan's deep and husky voice yell over the thunder.
Huh....Ethan? What is he-
"Marie!" Ethan yells again, causing me to jump into action. Quickly, I drop the blanket at my feet and run past the stalls and to the barns doors. In less than five seconds Ethan's wet form pushes trough the doors as I struggle to shut them closed.
"A little help here." I say through gritted teeth.
With a hard shove, Ethan and I have the doors tightly latched. Exhausted from the effort we both collapse on the hay below us side by side. Sounds of our heavy breathing mixed in with frequent neighing of the horses occupies the thick air. I close my eyes for a brief moment before glancing at the soaking wet man laying next to me.
Ethan's once blonde hair is now a light brown mess that's sticking to his forehead. His face and arms are glistening with droplets of rain while his jeans and white t-shirt stick to him like a second skin.
My mouth automatically goes dry at the sight of his rippling abs and taut biceps.
Damn this boy is sexy when wet.
Probably feeling my stare, he looks down at me. Instead of looking away, I keep his stare. His darkened green eyes send warm spurts of energy through my body. And just for a second I don't remember our argument. Only for a moment.
"I'll get you clothes." I manage to say before walking to the back of the barn to retrieve the other large t-shirt and rain boots. I swallow extra hard at the thought of him in nothing but this shirt, rain boots, and his boxers.
