3rd Person Omniscient POV

While Dream slept peacefully with Y/N. Sam left his work in the prison cell to check on Dream. He set off, down the hallways toward Y/N's guard room. Unbeknownst to him, Y/N had a pressure plate under the floor which would send a redstone signal to Y/N letting her know if Sam was close.

His boots step onto the plate and the signal is sent. Y/N quickly shifts Dream off her lap and onto his own side of the bed.

"Mmmm?" Dream mutters sleepily.

"Sam's coming," she whispers.

He nods and lies on his side facing away from the door, eyes open.

Sam walks down the hall and knocks on the door.

"Y/N?"

"It's unlocked."

She opens the door and a bar of light falls onto Dream.

"Is he asleep?"

"Yes," her position lies unchanged. Still sitting against the headboard in her armor holding her sword. Dream lies quietly next to her, awake.

"Is the chain on?" Sam asks moving closer.

"Yeah, how was work on the cell?" she asks trying to change the subject.

"Pretty good, I'll have it finished by tomorrow afternoon. I'm sorry Dream had to stay with you. Was he any trouble?"

"No, he thinks I'm on his side so he trusts me. But when he attempts to escape, I'll be the one who tracks him down."

"Let's hope that never happens," Sam says with a smile. He closes the door and Y/N hears it click shut.

His footsteps fade away and Dream shifts to turn away from Y/N.

"Dream?" Her fingerless gloved hand reaches over to touch his shoulder but he moves away.

"Don't touch me, traitor."

"Dream, I'm not betraying you. I told you I'm being a double agent. I say these kinds of things so Sam doesn't think I actually care about you," she sighs. "I would be doing this if I didn't care about you."

Dream turns over to face Y/N and snuggles against her.

"Promise me that if I do escape, you won't hunt me down."

"If I'm ordered to then no, I can't. I'm going to have to. But let's say I'm chasing you through the forest, you run left but I run straight instead. I tell them I lost you in the forest while you run away. But, if you get caught again, I'm not saving you. Deal?"

"Yes, thank you."

Dream curls closer into her and she strokes his arm.

"I'm always on your side, remember that."

He closes his eyes and after a while, she does too.

Y/N wakes up and stretches before freezing in place. Her hands brush against a warm body lying next to her.

Dream lies against her side, curled up in a ball, breathing deeply and evenly. She strokes his hair, neck, face, and her fingers linger on his lips but pull away.

No, I can't, She thinks. He's a prisoner, I'm a guard. I can't love him. I can care about him, but I can't love him. I want to, but I can't. He doesn't deserve to be in here. I need to convince Sam to let him out.

Dream eventually wakes up and they have breakfast. Before long, Sam knocks on the door.

"Y/N?" he asks without opening it. "Cell is ready, bring Dream out."

Dream looks at her with a pleading look but she just unties the chain and tugs it lightly. He gets up as she draws her sword and opens the door. The door opens and Sam stands there with a tired look but his sword is drawn.

"Finally," he says in an annoyed voice. He puts the sword close to Dream but Y/N moves in the way and pulls Dream along.

They lead Dream to his cell and once the bridge starts to move, Dream feels his freedom trickle away once again. After the guards lock his chains, Sam leaves but Y/N stays with him.

She hands Dream back his journal and he resumes writing.

September 28,

I felt free. Once I was finally freed from all the chains, just me and Y/N in her room alone. We had a great time and I felt normal for the first time in months. I ate actually good food and slept with her in the same bed. Not gonna lie, it was really nice to have someone to cuddle against. Of course, Sam finished fixing the cell and I'm back in here. I need to escape. One way or another I will. But Y/N won't let me. I don't want to betray her trust but what else can I do? I want out of here.

They sit in the cell talking for a bit but Dream can't help but feel sad that he was so close to a normal life, yet it was taken from him.

"Dream?" she finally asks. "Are you okay?"

No

"Yes, I'm good."

"Alright fine, well I brought you some breakfast in case you're hungry."

She presses a bowl of an assortment of fruit into his hands.

"Thanks," he smiles but it's forced.

"I need to do some patrolling but I'll see you around."

"Yeah, sure."

Y/N leaves and returns to her room. Opening her journal and flipping to the next page.

September 28,

Dream's back in his prison cell, hooray. I'm not really happy honestly. Dream is my only friend here, I don't really talk with anyone else and even if I do, it's for business. Being in the prison makes me feel happy because I'm with my one true friend, Dream. I'll find a way to convince Sam to set him free, I swear I will.

The next few weeks fly by, nothing changes and Dream continues to feel depressed. But as the seasons change, so do feelings...
