___

THE TRAFFIC INTO SCHOOL had been backed up down the street. Paxton assumes it was a wreck or that everyone had just showed up late at the same time. Charlie complained that he would be late to his class, she didn't mind being late. It was once they finally enter the parking lot that they'd know why it took so long to pull in.

Flashing red and blue lights blind the two. Police cars and an ambulance block off an area where the school buses park. Crime scene tape secures the area, making sure no students could venture pass it.

Charlie could care less, his mind set on the test he has in just a few minutes. Paxton, however, couldn't take her eyes off of the police officers investigating the bus. They blocked her view so she couldn't see why they would be over there. It gave her a nauseous feeling, putting her back to the night of her father's death.

Charlie slams his door in a hurry, pulling her fixated gaze away. She follows behind him but not without turning back to the scene. Still, the officers shield the area. It must be bad, she thinks to herself.

Timing had been perfect when she walks in because she notices Allison a few paces ahead of her. She quickly meets up with the girl, saying a quick hello.

"What happened out there?" Paxton questions her as they head to class.

Allison inhales, "they found a body in the bus, my dad was telling me about it on the way here."

Paxton pauses. It was like walls around her were closing in. The anxiety of another death causing her to zone out of reality. The voices of students rushing to close echo around her.

The sound of two people crashing into each other causes her to break out the trance. Her attention goes to Allison, slightly ahead of her. Her books she had been holding were on the floor. Scott is in front of the two, his eyes wide as he has trouble stabling his breathing.

"God, you scared the hell out of me," Allison laughs, noticing Scott's bewildered expression.

Paxton watches as Scott's worried look starts to soften. He had been too busy making sure Allison was really there to see her standing there.

"You're okay?" he asks her, not fully believing she was real.

Maybe whatever was happening outside wasn't just affecting Paxton. Clearly, it has Scott in a daze.

"Once my heart starts beating again, yeah," she answers with a smile.

The two drop to the floor to pick up her things. Scott keeps his eyes on her, full of amazement.

Allison sees his odd reaction, "what?" she asks, her happiness fading.

"I'm just happy to see you," he breathes.

The intercom around them beeps. "Attention, students. This is your principal. I know you're all wondering about the incident that occurred last night to one of our buses. While the police work to determine what happened, classes will proceed as scheduled. Thank you."

The students listening in the hallways groan, including Paxton. "You would think with a murder happening on school grounds, that they would close for the day," she says as she catches up to Scott and Allison, the two of them putting her things in her backpack.

"Save us a seat at lunch?" she asks Scott, well, more tells him. He smiles, agreeing.

Allison puts an arm through Paxton's, pulling her to their class. The touch was uneasy for Paxton at first but, looking over to Allison, she realizes how innocent it is. How Allison must truly see her as a friend. It had been a long time since Paxton felt the comfortable feeling that surrounds a friendship.
