Your P.O.V:

You were scared out of your mind about the final phase. No one had any idea what you were going to be tested on or what it was going to be like. People were trying to guess it, but you decided to stay away from those conversations because they weren't helping your stress levels to go down. You decided to just take a walk, so you went outside of your room to travel the halls.

It was weird how empty the halls were. You were so use to having at least a few other applicants wandering the halls, but since there aren't many left for the last phase it made sense. 'I wonder what the last phase is going to be on.' You begin to think, 'No! I have to stop thinking about that! That's the whole reason I decided to go for a walk.' You were so lost in thought that you didn't even notice the other person walking down the hall until you were close enough to hear their jaw chattering. You look up to see Gittarackur and you both stop dead in your tracks. He was wearing a creepy smile on his face will you froze, terrified under his intense glare. You knew he was a creep, but you didn't understand why he made you stomach turn and make your heart beat rapidly. Something in the back of your mind told you that you should be a lot more afraid of him than you would be of just any creep. You continued down the hall at a brisker pace with your mind on overdrive. It was as if there was something about him that you should remember, but you just couldn't. What was it?

"I have an announcement for all applicants! The Chairman wishes to interview the remaining candidates. When your number is called, please come to the first reception room on the second floor. Then we'll start with #44, Hisoka!" Someone said over the speakers.

'Is this it? Is this the final phase?! It's some solo interview with the Chairman himself?!' You started freaking out again and sprinted back to your room.

You wait with the rest of your friends in your room. The tension the the room, you could cut it with a knife. Your anxiety building up so much that you might just scream like a kettle. And then, the time came, " Applicant number 406, Y/n."

You shot up to your feet and stare around your room to your friends wide eyed. They all nodded at you reassuringly, but even they couldn't hide their nervousness. You nod back at them and turn to walk out the door.
The walk to the room was the longest walk you've ever taken, and now that you stood outside the room you froze.

"Come in Y/n." A voice from inside the room said. You flinch a little and slowly push the door open to see the Chairman sitting behind his desk with a paper in front of him, "Take a seat, and we'll proceed with the interview."

"Seriously?" You say half disappointed and relieved you look down at the questions in front of him, "The final phase is a personality test?"

The Chairman simply chuckles and smiles at you, "No this isn't the final phase. It's just an interview so that I can get to know you."

"Okay." You say as you take a seat in front of him.

"So how are you finding the Hunter Exam?" He asks.

"Oh, its as challenging as they all say, but I'm really having fun!" You respond.

        "Why?" He asks.

"Well, I got to experience all of this and I got to meet so many people and make so many friends!" You smile widely to yourself, thankful that the days with no friends were over.

"That's nice," The Chairman smiles and continues with his questions, "Next, why do you want to be a hunter?"

"I want to follow in my parents footsteps, " You say truthfully, a soft smile forming on your lips at the thought of your parents, "I want to be like them. Bringing justice to where it's do. Begin heroes."

"Yes your parents were quite the blacklist hunters." He smiles, "Next question. Which of the other applicants are you keeping an eye on?"

"Numbers 405, 99, 404 and 403 because we plan on passing this together and.." You pause as their images flash though your mind, "Hisoka #44 and Gittarackur #301, I find them really creepy and #301 in particular, I feel the most uncomfortable around, as if he's hiding something." Your eyes narrow on the ground as you try to come up with what exactly it was.

"I see." The Chairman nods, "And finally, which of the other applicants would you least want to fight?"

"Again the people I said for the last question. The first 4 because they're my friends and I wouldn't want to fight them, unless it's absolutely necessary. But, for #44 and #301, I don't want to fight them because, I'm afraid I wouldn't stand a chance. They fight to kill, that much I can tell."

"I understand. That's all, thank you for taking your time to answer my questions. You may go now." You get up to leave the room, "Oh and Y/n!" He stops you, "Good luck in the next phase I'd keep a close eye on your friends if I were you." You nod confused by his statement but leave the room quietly.

...

You sat cross legged on a cushion across from Leorio. His face was buried in a large book, so much so that his nose seemed to melt into the pages. For some reason he was dead set on studying for the final phase which he believed to be a written test.

"Why would they make us do a writer test Leorio? There's never been a written test in the hunter exam." You say, already aware that he wasn't going to listen.

"Well you never know what they'll throw at us, you should be studying too." Leorio advises, pushing another textbook towards you from across the table. You stare at it disgustedly, "I'm on a break from school thanks. Even if i start studying now, I'll never remember anything." You sigh and get up. You spot Gon and Killua playing rock paper scissors, they too gave up on studying. You turn to see Kurapika sitting on the couch, as usual, reading.

"You're studying too?" You ask, beginning to worry. Maybe you should be studying.

"Oh," Kurapika says, taken aback by suddenly being called, "No, I'm just passing some time reading. If there is a written test, which I highly doubt, I'll be ready for it."

You take a seat next to him and slouch on the couch. "If there is a written test, would we be able to switch brains? You know just for the test." He simply chuckles, obviously thinking that it was a sufficient enough answer and you sigh heavily.

"Way to be humble by the way." You say sarcastically, making him chuckle again. You sit up straighter then lean down a bit to get a look at the book he was reading, "Whatcha reading?"

"It's just a book about past hunter exam applicants." He says, flipping through the various profiles. Suddenly a certain section in the book catches your eye.

"Wait, wait! Can you go back a bit." You ask as Kurapika flips back a few pages, "Right- THERE! Hm... that's weird isn't it? Only one person passed this exam." You say looking at the person's profile. Your eyes widen when they read the name of the applicant. "Hey Gon! Come here for a second." You beckon the young boy. He comes over and peers at the book in Kurapika's lap towards the page you were showing him. "You said you were looking for your dad right? Could that be him?"
Gon simply stares at the profile, then a slow smile appears on his face. His eyes shine in recognition. "Yup!" He says, "That's him! Wow, He was the only one to pass in his year? It must've been a really hard year." He says in awe and both you a Kurapika nod in agreement.

"It's crazy how alike you two look." You say looking from Gon to the picture of his father. They had the same hair, same face shape, and the same innocent, ever glowing eyes. The only difference were their expressions. Gon was always cheerful and innocent, where as his father appeared to be more serious, and a little cocky... Okay...A lot cocky.

"I ask all of the remaining applicants to proceed down to the 1st floor for the final phase in 5mins. Thank you." Says a voice over the speakers.

"I guess we should head down now." Says Kurapika.

"NO! I'M NOT READY YET!" Screams Leorio as his eyes scan 50 sentences at once in the book he's reading.

...

So turns out it's not a written test! Who knew? When you found out, Leorio's face was a mixture of frustration and relief        which made you suppress a giggle. In this phase it was just one on one fighting. The only rule was that you couldn't kill any other applicants or you'd be disqualified and automatically the remaining applicants will pass. Only one person would fail this phase.

The first match was Gon Vs Hanzo. The battle immediately started with Gon getting beaten to a pulp by Hanzo. Gon usually had the advantage when it came to speed, but Hanzo's speed was unnaturally quick for someone of his stature. He landed a clean hit on Gon's back, trying to get Gon to give up, but of course Gon refused to. He punched Gon in the gut, almost sending him flying and asked him to give up. Gon resufed again.  The true nature of this phase was becoming evident. At first you believed that the "No killing rule" was a show of pity on the chairman's part, but is was the complete opposite. No one who made it this far would just easily quit. We were all determined and stubborn and that stubbornness would cost us the most pain. Sure one can't be killed, but one can be tortured to the bridge of death until they gave up. And poor Gon was the first to experience this.
With ever kick Gon received you cringed. Gon's face was swollen beyond recognition and his body scratched and bleeding from all over, but he still refused to give up. Leorio tried to stop the match from continuing, tried to get Gon to surrender which you hoped he would, but was stopped by Kurapika. He had said that if we were in his position, we wouldn't give in as well, but just watching him get beat up felt wrong. With one last "SMACK" Gon lay face down on the floor of the battle room.

'That's it!' You think to yourself as you proceed to go into the arena and take out this cocky ninja yourself.

"Stop!" Says the ref, "Should you enter the ring to help Gon, he will be disqualified."

"What?" You scream in disbelief, "Can you not see how much pain he's in. At least tend to his injuries!"

"We cannot, until the battle is over." The ref says and you storm up to him.

        "Listen here you-" You start.

"I'm fine Y/n." You turn to see Gon was was saying as much. He stands up again and you cringe at how beat up he looked. However, behind the cuts and the swollen cheek, his eyes still shine with the usual determination. The glow didn't reassure you, it just worried you more. ' This battle isn't ending anytime soon.' You thought to yourself. And you were right.

The battle lasted another 3 hours. Leorios shoulders were shaking furiously, Kurapika was clenching his fist in attempts to keep his composure and you were siting against the was with your hands to your ears trying to block out the sounds. It was all you could do to keep yourself from slaying that cocky ninja right then and there! The force and sound of every hit Gon took shook the whole room. The floor was cover in blood. Gon's blood. You wanted to look away but you couldn't.

"Get up." Hanzo demanded over Gon's limp body. Gon was scarily pale, and shaking intensely as if trying to move, but his body refused. 'He still hasn't given up.' You thought in a mixture of pride and frustration.

"Stop!" Leorio shreiked, "I'll fight you in his place!" He stepped forward only to be stopped by a bunch of referees, like you had been previously.

"It's okay...Leorio..." Gon said though shaky breaths, "This...this is....nothing.." He stood up still hunched over, hand on his knees for support. "I can... still fight..." He looked up to meet his eyes, still filled with determination. You held you hand to your mouth to silence your screams. You eyes filled with tears, you couldn't take it anymore. Hanzo seemed annoyed as well, you could see him shaking. He tripped Gon onto his face once again and kneelled down next to Gon. He held Gon's arm behind his back to keep him in place.

"I'm going to break your arm." Hanzo said calmly.

You shot up from your seat and your eyes widened beyond their physical capabilities.

"I'm not joking. So, give up. Surrender." Hanzo continued. Silence hung over the room, until you couldn't take it any more.

"Gon p-please. S-stop this already! I'm you're next opponent! I'll let you win! Just stop please!" You scream, Kurapika grabs your arm to hold you back. You turn to face him and he shakes his head. You shouted hoping to change Gon mind, but you already knew his answer.

        "NEVER!" He shouts.

"Crack!" reverberates throughout the room. Kurapika pulls you into a tight embrace shielding your eyes. You scream an earsplitting cream into his shirt, unable to hold back your tears. "Gon!" You shout-whisper into Kurapika's chest.

"Kurapika... Don't try to stop me... If he does anything else to Gon. I won't be able to stop myself." Leorio said.

"Me? Stop you?" You look up to see Kurapika's beautiful glowing red eyes, "Don't worry, there's no chance of that happening."
