Her breath caught in a jolt as Bucky yanked her upward and the ground disappeared beneath her feet. She squinted in surprise and grabbed his wrist.
When she opened them again, in front of her was the face burning with rage.
Bucky's jaw muscles were so tense that she thought she could hear his teeth grinding. His gaze literally pierced her - full of hatred and irascibility.
Out of the corner of her eye, Emilia noticed movement. Steve, Wanda and the others were rushing toward. None of them noticed the curt movements of her left hand, which she took from Bucky's arm and now let hang loosely beside her.
"Bucky!"
Steve slammed into an invisible wall as did the others. Dumbfounded, he looked at Sam, Clint and Wanda, who had followed.
Only Scott was still standing by the van with his mouth open, trying to understand what just happened: "There was nothing about this in the travel brochure..."
"Bucky, what are you doing?!" asked Steve, still trying to get to the two without success.
"The doctor! Hydra! I saw her!"
Not for a single second did Bucky take his eyes off her. Fear and pain spread through him alongside immense anger, as at the sight of her his memories came crashing over him like a flood.
Emilia gasped audibly as she clenched her fingers around the shiny metal in front of her.
"I know, but it's not what you think!"
At Steve's words, Bucky jerked his head around and looked at him in horror: "You knew?"
Scott, who meanwhile had come out of his stupor, was now standing with the others, looking back and forth in puzzlement.
"I guess the all-inclusive entertainment package came free..."
Clint looked at him briefly and merely gave his comment a dismissive grumble.
Turning back to his supposed enemy, Bucky looked directly into Emilia's eyes. At that moment, something seemed to hold him back and his grip loosened a bit. However, only for a short second.
Emilia could feel him squeezing tighter again. Almost incessantly his fingers closed around her neck.
He was about to kill her and she should have felt fear and panic. But that was not the case.
She knew that his hatred was not for her, but for what she represented to him. Her appearance seemed to be irrevocably linked to Hydra in his memories since the day they first met. And that tormented him deeply.
"Could we maybe discuss the backstory later and see about splitting the two of them up?"
It was Clint who stared anxiously at the dangerous situation before him. Sam and Wanda also continued to try to find a way through the unknown barrier, but failed to break through it.
When Emilia recognized Wanda raising her hands and the reddish seeming veils forming in them, only a soft but clear croak escaped her: "No! Don't!"
Wanda paused in her movement.
Emilia hoped that she would not use her powers. Why, she herself had no idea exactly. The only thing she knew for sure was that she couldn't let it happen.
Her stomach churned at the thought of someone digging around in Bucky's already jumbled memories again, trying to manipulate him. No one could tell if this wouldn't leave a far worse damage.
