It wasn't until he disappeared from her sight that Emilia was able to break free of her rigidity and toddled after him barefoot.
"Hey! What the fuck do you think you are doing? You can't stop me from coming with you!"
In the meantime, Bucky stripped off his sweatpants. Underneath, in all its glory, was revealed what had lasciviously forced itself between her thighs not five minutes before. Emilia had to swallow deeply once to tear herself away from the seductive sight.
"You bet I can! Even if I have to ask Sam to drop Red Wing off as babysitter: you're not going anywhere!"
"I told you before, I can take care of myself damn well! I don't need a babysitter! So don't take your bad temper the fuck out on me now!"
"It's not that I have bad temper! I just have a fast reaction to bullshit!"
She knew that his impatient and fractious rebuke was in response to what they heard from Sam. He was simply expressing his concern for her in this way. Nonetheless, it hit Emilia harder than she thought because she was no different with him.
"I'm not just going to sit here and wait for you to come back... What if..."
After getting into his slip boxers, he pulled the zipper of his jeans closed as her suddenly shaky voice caught his attention. She stood with her arms crossed, convulsively trying to suppress the tears that were welling up.
Bucky knew that his near death a short time ago was still in her bones. The look in her eyes reminded him of the moment in Wakanda when he himself had to watch helplessly as her heart stopped beating.
All at once, his face softened. He hurried toward her and placed his hands on her cheeks, squeezing them carefully.
"Forgive me, little dimple. I didn't mean to bark at you like that. It's just..."
He breathed a kiss on her forehead and pulled her into his arms. His chin rested on the top of her head as he hugged her to him. Like a small child, Emilia refused at first to put her arms around his warm, naked chest.
"We do have a deal, right? And I'll stick to it - I promise."
Emilia remembered back to the day a few weeks ago when they were on the plane and disappeared into the clouds with one last glimpse of the Southeast Asian land beneath them.
Neither wanted to see the other exposed to danger. So they swore to each other not to put themselves in any.
She herself had no idea at that time what she wanted to do. She was only sure of one thing: there were other ways to achieve something good and to make the world a little bit better.
At the same time, she was fully aware that Bucky wouldn't be stopped from helping Captain America with his missions. Still, she could at least get him to promise that he would only get involved in those operations that didn't seem so risky.
"You heard Sam: They're not many. And we're not fighting them alone. You know that."
The sound of his voice calmed her down just a bit. The muffled quiet thumping of the heart, which reached her ear from his warm chest, reassured her even more. Emilia's palms sought their way over his waist up his back, where they came to rest on his broad bare shoulder blades.
"I know. Anyway..."
Bucky knew by the still slightly miffed, if more conciliatory tone of her voice even without looking at her, that she admitted defeat and understood. Taking her face again, he pressed another kiss to her forehead with a smile and went ahead to gather some things.
