"I'm a black man carrying the stars and stripes. What don't I understand? Every time I pick this thing up, I know there are millions of people who are gonna hate me for it. Even now, here, I feel it. The stares, the judgment. And there's nothin I can do to change it. Yet, I'm still here. No super serum, no blonde hair or blue eyes. The only power I have is that I believe we can do better."

Bucky leaned against one of the ambulances and, like everyone else around them, listened to Sam's voice trying to appeal to people's sanity.

He felt a sense of pride at the sight of his friend.

"I mean, this girl died trying to stop you."

Sam pointed to Karli's covered lifeless body on one of the stretchers. It was Sharon, who shot her after Emilia left her and caught back up to him and the teenager in the catacombs.

Sam stood among the bigwigs of the GRC panel, surrounded by an even bigger crowd of cops, spectators and cameras.

"And no has one stopped for one second to ask why. You've gotta do better, Senator."

Sam walked up to the man in the suit in front of him. He didn't know what to say in response, nor did the other fancy-dressed committee members around him.

"The question you have to ask yourself is: How are you going to use the power?"

For another fleeting moment, Sam looked at the speechless man before turning away from him and the crowd and walking toward Bucky. As he passed, he nodded briefly to Walker, who was also listening to him standing in front of the ambulance. It was like a silent acceptance.

"Sorry, I was, uh, I was texting and so, all I heard was, um, a black guy in stars and stripes."

Sam laughed at Bucky's words as they moved away from the crowd.

"Nice job, Cap." Bucky patted the shield Sam was carrying on his back.

"Thanks."

Standing leaning against one of the cars behind the emergency vehicles was Sharon. She held a compress to the gunshot wound on her abdomen.

"I need to stop the bleeding."

"We gotta get you to a hospital!"

"She's not gonna listen." Bucky returned Sam's call to Sharon.

"At least let the paramedics here take care of you. Then you can go back into hiding."

"Talking 'bout going into hiding, where's Emilia anyway?" Sam looked questioningly at Bucky.

"Why are you looking at me? I thought she was with you?!" Looking around, Bucky hoped to find her face among the people. To no avail.

"Carson didn't get out?" At Sharon's troubling question, two pairs of eyes fixed anxiously on her."I thought she was going to help you? Was wondering why she wasn't with you, Wilson."

She looked at Sam, who was beginning to feel uneasy. But he refused to pay attention to it at first and had his own speculations.

"Maybe she was stopped by the task force. Or perhaps arrested after all, because she stole the police car."

His attempt to lighten the suddenly tense mood about Emilia's whereabouts somewhat failed.

"I don't think so. She would have contacted us by now, wouldn't she?" Bucky stood uneasily between the ambulances. He let his gaze slide over the crowd, but still didn't find her.
