Bucky was about to sit down at the dinner table when Emilia came through the front door with AJ and Cass.
"Mum, that was so cool! Emilia taught them some really awesome tricks. I'd love to learn how to do something like that someday."
As she turned the corner to the dining room, he could just catch the warm smile, but it immediately faded at the sight of him. Rooted to the spot, Emilia stopped and stared at Bucky.
"Oh... I didn't know that..."
"Come in and sit down or everything gets cold." Sarah pointed to the table and one of the empty chairs.
"And you two clean up your shoes and wash your hands first", she instructed her sons with a finger in the air pointing to the wardrobe and the bathroom.
"That's not fair, Mum! What about Emilia?"
"You're right, Cass. I'll go with you."
She accepted the older of the boys' unwanted invitation to stall for a bit and compose herself again.
Only seconds later, the three of them disappeared into the hallway and behind the door to the bathroom with a loud clatter.
"You said we wouldn't run into each other here."
Clenching his teeth, Bucky hissed at Sam, who was about to sit down next to him at the end of the table. As he did so, he put down the bowl of steaming potatoes with an exaggeratedly regretful expression on his face.
"Oh, I'm really sorry 'bout that, Barnes. I guess I forgot to mention it."
His deliberately apologetic undertone told Bucky he wasn't sorry at all. Snorting, he propped his hands on the table and stood up.
"I'm leaving. It's not a good idea and..."
"Sit down!"
Sarah's suddenly harsh tone made both men look up like little schoolboys.
"We're eating now. And no one leaves until the plates are empty!"
Intimidated, Bucky slowly lowered himself back into the chair. He looked after Sarah, who disappeared into the kitchen to get two more glasses.
"Normally, I'd envy you for still having your sister. But right now, I actually don't know if I should pity you more."
With an almost fearful expression, the two men sat at the table and looked at the passage to the kitchen, where the clinking sound of glass could be heard.
"Yeah... if you don't understand how you can love your sister and be afraid of her ripping your head off at the same time, then you're probably an only child."
Sarah barely managed to understand what Sam was saying. She gave him a sinister glare, whereupon he looked innocently in the other direction and seemed to be searching for something on the wall.
"Can we play with the alligators next time?"
"Woah... AJ, take it easy. We shouldn't start scaring up the whole Mississippi right away."
As Emilia came back out of the bathroom with the boys, Sarah caught the look she was giving Bucky. She couldn't help but smirk at that and set the two glasses down on the table.
Sam had told her quite a bit since he and Emilia arrived at Delacroix. Not only about everything that was going on, but also about the supposed lovebirds. Most of all, though, Bucky got on her brothers nerves, although there wasn't really a reason for it.
