Chapter 56

Sam quickly realized that it was a trap. So did Bucky, who, in a surprise phone call to Karli, desperately tried to stop her.

Her maneuver had its effect and distracted from their true plans: to kidnap the GRC members.

While Sharon followed some suspicious uniformed men and part of the GRC committee into the underground parking garage, Emilia held down the fort in front of the building.

"She tricked us!"

At the exact moment she heard Bucky's adrenaline-soaked voice through her in-ear, she saw the armored vehicles pull out of the underground parking garage.

"Something doesn't feel right here at all. I'll follow them."

A little frantically, she scanned the area. Her rental car was a few hundred yards away. And even if she used her hovering ability, it wouldn't be fast enough to follow them. As she watched one of the police officers get out of his police car, an idea occurred to her.

Bucky was on his way to the underground garage to get a ride and quickly found one. He jumped on the motorcycle and could hear Emilia's sighing mutter loud and clear.

"Uh... This could cost me my driver's license... or I might end up behind bars for a few hours. But whatever."

"What are you talking about?"

"Oh, nothing. Just... I'm stealing the car of cop right now." 

Now Sam joined in, unable to stifle a grin at what she said.

"Maybe there'll be extenuating circumstances if you play sweet and innocent."

"Nah! No way! It's more like annoying and thoughtless... How can you always come up with such stupid ideas, Carson?!"

That Bucky was still a bit grouchy because he just couldn't understand Emilia's indifferent behavior was clear. Instead of getting upset about his description of her, which was quite accurate after all, she agreed with him in a way.

"Once upon a time I was sweet and innocent. But, you know, Barnes: then shit happend."

He knew exactly who the subliminal sideswipe was meant to be directed at and grumbled unintelligibly to himself as he headed out into the street.

"No time for any kind of flattery, guys! They've brought the other members upstairs."

Sharon, meanwhile, was standing outside the building calling the others to reason when she saw something moving on the roof of the tower block.

"You better speed things up, Sam. The chopper's about to take off."

Emilia nearly crashed into a barrier as she turned the corner.

She had momentarily lost track of the Flag Smashers, but found them again on the other side of the roadblock some distance away.

One of the black-cloaked men pulled the clueless driver out of the armored truck. Jumping out of the car, she noticed out of the corner of her eye the rapidly approaching motorcycle on the other side.

"Barnes? What... what the hell are you doing?!"

Without answering, Bucky raced at high speed towards one of the concrete barriers in front of him.

For a moment, Emilia's heart stopped as she watched him fly through the air in a high arc only moments later, throwing himself full force against the Flag Smasher.
