Grumbling, Bucky came back an hour later across the driveway between the trees. The clear night air was supposed to take his mind off things. But it didn't really help him do that.
"Why the hell doesn't she just tell me right in my face what she doesn't like? She always has."
Already since the battle against Thanos, he was aware that Emilia was struggling with something. She told him a few things about her life over the past years that night in Madripoor. Still, there seemed to be more.
Whatever it was, Bucky couldn't help thinking that it had something to do with him.
Sighing and with his hands in his jeans pockets, he strolled toward the house. Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed a shimmering movement. When he turned toward it, he couldn't believe his eyes at first.
If he had believed in magic and mystical worlds, the sight of the fairy-like creature in the glittering wet probably wouldn't have blown him away. And even if he did, he would surely be standing there just as fascinated, staring at her.
Emilia's silhouette was reflected on the surface of the water next to the oval-shaped moon. Her gaze was absently fixed over the treetops into the stars.
Despite the distance, Bucky recognized the tip of her small nose. The open hair fell over her bare shoulder.
It was like a siren rising from the water, watching for someone.
Bucky remembered reading about them at some point, how they bewitched sailors with their singing to lure them in. In their trance they fell for the beautiful creatures that only played with its victims and later killed them.
A rather cruel fantasy that could still be so real.
This woman in her tight-fitting top and shorts was as dangerously attractive to him as a siren to a sailor.
Only with the small difference that a much more threatening charm emanated from her.
Not only what she had physically reawakened in Bucky, but also the things that couldn't be grabbed with the hands or captured with the eyes.
It was something you felt without even touching the other. Deep down in heart and soul.
And that exactly made him the most afraid.
But this fear really pushed him to talk to her. Because it was for the most part the concern for Emilia that made him feel this way.
With a few steps he reached the shore beside the little boathouse and regarded her a moment longer.
She didn't move and just stood there like a statue.
"Mia?"
No response.
"Hey, Mia?"
Still Emilia didn't answer.
"Mia!"
It wasn't until the third time and Bucky's slightly louder voice that she turned to face him.
Snapped out of her thoughts, she looked at him in surprise for only a few seconds until she walked toward him under the splashing sounds of the water.
Grabbing the towel from the back of the wooden chair that stood next to the small staircase of the boathouse, she sat down on it.
Avoiding his gaze, Emilia silently dried her legs and feet while Bucky eyed her.
"Is everything okay?"
